Job Summary The Windows Engineer III will be primarily responsible for supporting a single TierPoint Windows OS managed customer base located in a TierPoint datacenter. The Windows Engineer III position will act as the senior member of the Advanced Services team and will provide guidance to junior members of the team. This role requires a client first mentality high sense of ownership of problems and requests assigned as well as a high level of attention to detail. The main focus is patching the Windows infrastructure for a large client. This environment operates 24x7 with a primary focus on monthly patching windows currently scheduled one weekend per month (Saturday-Sunday 8:30AM 9:00PM CST). This is a hands-on role involving patch deployment automation monitoring and troubleshooting across a large complex infrastructure. The secondary focus is assisting the AES team with other client patching (Windows Network and Vmware) troubleshooting and ticket resolution.
Responsibilities Monthly Patching Execution: Execute Windows server patching during scheduled monthly windows (Saturday-Sunday 8:30AM 9:00PM CST). Run pre-configured PowerShell scripts and PDQ deployments within 1.5-hour patching windows per group (60 servers per window). Monitor and troubleshoot patching processes ensuring successful deployment via WSUS PDQ and task scheduler integrations. Resolve patching failures (reboot servers manually trigger patches etc.) and report issues to the team. Patching Preparation and QA: Participate in weekly calls with the customer to review upcoming patches and prep for patching windows. Test patches on designated test servers prior to production deployment. Validate post-patch functionality using QA tools (e.g. UiPath) and monitor email notifications to ensure patching success. Troubleshooting and Support: Resolve issues with Windows VMs on VMware platforms (e.g. unresponsive servers console access VM reboots). Support Windows RDS farms and Windows cluster patching processes. Follow established patching order and processes for security updates. Automation and Monitoring: Monitor automated patching scripts and workflows ensuring successful execution. Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for process optimization. Collaboration and Growth: Work closely with the AES team to support additional customers and contribute to the goal of 24x7 coverage. Be flexible in supporting future changes to patching schedules including potential expansion to multiple weekends.
Qualifications / Requirements 8 years of experience in working with Windows Server Operating Systems. 3 years of experience working with Active Directory DNS and DHCP. 3 years of experience working with Windows Server Failover Clustering. 3 years of experience with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). 3 years of experience working with Remote Desktop Services (RDS). 3 years of experience working with Internet Information Service (IIS) and or .NET. 3 years of experience with PowerShell scripting language. Strong understanding of Distributed File System Replication (DFSR.) Strong understanding of Windows monitoring protocols SNMP WinRM WMI. Strong understanding of Virtualization environments including VMware and Hyper-V hypervisors. Strong understanding of core networking concepts (IPv4 IPv6 VLANs NAT.) Experience with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) and System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM.) Ability to analyze and interpret a variety of infrastructure and performance metrics to make client recommendations for high priority escalations. Very strong client management skills including written and verbal communication. Willingness to meet and work with clients to discuss and outline technologies and processes that could improve their current environment. Ability to lead and manage complex projects and see them to completion. Desire to improve upon existing systems and automate processes including writing and maintaining documentation. Maintain a deep technical understanding of current and emerging products in the Windows server space. Willingness to work with product groups to integrate and test upcoming initiatives. Willingness to mentor and train level I and II Windows resources as their subject matter expert.
Essential Functions Strong experience with Windows patching using WSUS PowerShell and PDQ. Solid knowledge of Windows Server () environments including patching best practices and troubleshooting. Experience with large Windows RDS farms. Understanding of Windows clusters (failover patching troubleshooting). VMware experience for troubleshooting Windows VM issues (e.g. console access reboots patch failures). Vmware patching experience.
Preferred Experience Microsoft Windows Certifications Networking certification (Network CCENT CCNA) would be advantageous. VMware or Hyper-V certification would be advantageous. Prior 4 years experience particularly in the data center industry. ConnectWise patching experience.
