The Assistant Director will assist the Director of Parks and Recreation in planning managing and directing the overall day-to-day operations and administrative functions of the department including recreation youth development and administrative services; participates in the development and administration of the departmental budget; and supervises assigned management staff.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Program Development: Overseeing the planning and implementation of diverse recreational programs catering to the communitys needs and interests.
  • Facility Management: Ensuring proper maintenance and utilization of parks and recreation facilities.
  • Contract & Grant Management: Overseeing third-party contracts for operation of City property; application and administration of program and/or capital grants.
  • Community Engagement: Fostering positive relationships with the community through outreach events and programs promoting participation and inclusivity including acting as liaison to the Park and Recreation Advisory Commission.
  • Budget Oversight: Managing and allocating budget resources effectively to support various programs maintenance and improvements.
  • Strategic Planning: Contributing to the development and execution of long-term plans for parks and recreation services aligning with community needs.
  • Event Coordination: Overseeing events within parks promoting community engagement and fostering a sense of belonging including supporting the Park Steward program to meet community needs.

Minimum Requirements for Application

The following qualifications are guidelines as the appointing authority has broad discretion in filling positions in this classification.
Education:
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in public administration recreation and leisure services or related field. A Masters degree in public administration is highly desirable.

Experience:
Three years of supervisory management experience in parks recreation and cultural arts administration or a closely related field.

License or Certificate / Other Requirements
Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Drivers License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.

The Recruitment Process:

  • Vacation:2 weeks per year minimum with the ability to accrue more depending on public sector years of service
  • Retirement:CalPERS (California Public Employees Retirement System) with a pension formula of 2.5% @ 55 (for Classic CalPERS members) and 2% @ 62 for new CalPERS members. Classic Employees contribute 8% of pre-tax wages. The City of Oakland does not participate in Social Security
  • Health:The City of Oakland pays the full cost of employee and eligible dependent coverage at the Kaiser rate. Other plans include Anthem Blue Shield United Health Care and other HMO and PPO plans
  • Dental:Delta Dental full premium for employees and eligible dependents
  • Vision:VSP full premium for employees and eligible dependents
  • Sick leave:Employees accrue 12 days per year
  • Deferred Compensation:457(b) pre-tax plan and an after-tax ROTH 401(k)plan
  • Other benefits include a Flexible Spending Account Wellness Program Employee Assistance Program Life Insurance Tuition Reimbursement Employee Training & Telecommuting.

Please note: Salary is negotiable within the defined range depending on qualifications.

Disaster Service Workers
All employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
