Description of Job

About the Work Unit

The Engineer works in the Colorado Department of Transportations (CDOTs) Region 1s central section. This unit exists to provide engineering expertise in developing building and maintaining a safe and integrated transportation system. The unit manages or oversees projects for upgrading reconstructing and maintaining the highway system along with other projects that have federal state and local funds. The Residency designs projects provides oversight of design manages NEPA documentation manages consultants and provides construction management and project management.


About the Position

The Engineer-in-Training position is expected to gain engineering expertise and to apply engineering theories principles and standards to the design and preparation of plans and specifications for highway projects. This position will also ensure quality construction by supervising inspecting testing and documenting the work on highway construction projects and verify they are in compliance with the contract plans and specifications. As the selected candidate gains knowledge and experience there is opportunity for advancement.


This EIT I position is an entry level Construction Inspection Position. The applicant will learn to identify that the contractors construction methods procedures materials and end products are in compliance with the engineering details and specifications outlined in the construction plans by making detailed visual inspections in the field.

Construction Inspectionduties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Approximately 35% of time will be spent assisting the Construction Project Engineer including but not limited to the following activities: Assures accurate payment of funds to contractor for work completed by making detailed measurements of quantities from field data performs independent checks of measurements and calculations for computerized project pay estimates. Driving to project sites for observation and inspection of construction.
  • Approximately 50% of time will be spent performing Construction Inspection under the guidance and supervision of the Project Engineer learn to provide field inspection of construction methods procedures and materials utilized to assure that the final construction product meets all specifications and standards and is in conformance with plans specifications and engineering details. Inspects contractors work procedures in the field by being on site and being familiar with plans and specifications. Check inspection reports for description of contractors work calculations and accuracy. Assures accurate payment of funds to contractor for work completed by making detailed measurements of quantities from field data performs independent checks of measurements and calculations for computerized project pay estimates. Keeping detailed records in a daily diary of Contractor activities and materials placed and installed.
  • Approximately 15% will be spent in the office providing project design assistance under the guidance and supervision of a licensed professional engineer learning to apply current engineering principles and theories design specifications and federal state and local design standards to develop safe efficient and economical project designs. These projects consist of new construction or reconstruction of roadways intersections bridges culverts signs and pavement markings.
  • Learn to apply current engineering principles theories design specifications applicable design standards and engineering expertise to develop safe efficient and economical designs; utilize appropriate engineering software to develop project plans.
  • Assist with the evaluation of survey information culvert reports traffic studies site conditions and environmental constraints; calculate quantities by material pay item and use the quantities to estimate the construction working days.
  • Assist with the inspection and certification of the contractors equipment materials methods workmanship and products that they are in conformance with the contract plans and specifications.
  • Assemble data calculations figures reports and diaries for project records; check calculations and tabulated quantities summarized in plans under supervision.
  • Learn to include appropriate Standard and Special Project Specifications for inclusion in the PS&E submittal and ensure plan quality checks to avoid/limit errors in terms of both design standards and human factors (missed bid items and forgotten specifications).
  • Track construction and contract budgets and generate spend down information for each contract. Support the required financial reporting required including updating the federal financial plan and preparing monthly updates.
  • Assist with tracking project activities and document them as design progresses; tracking construction activities and document them as required; assist with drafting Contract Change Orders/Minor Contract Revisions letters and construction engineering memos; preparing a complete and accurate historical account of project activities and maintaining an organized filing system for easy access to documents.
  • Abide by all safety regulations policies and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment; attend and complete all required safety training.
  • Other job duties as assigned.


Work Environment:

  • Generally daytime hours Monday - Friday; night and/or weekend work may be required during the construction season April - November
  • Drives to and from the field office on a daily basis; drives to and from progress meetings as needed during the design phase of projects.
  • Overnight travel may be required to work out of town during the duration of certain projects.
  • Perform field construction inspections and work outside frequently.
  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles.

Substitutions:

  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.
  • OR Current valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.

Conditions of Employment

  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired for Engineer-In-Training positions must also licensure as a professional engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyorswithin eight years of initial appointment to an EIT position.

  • A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
