Responsibilities
The role involves performing electrical and electronic tasks related to the installation maintenance and repair of traffic signal systems communication systems and associated equipment. This includes working with mechanical electromechanical microprocessor-based and optical controllers. The job also includes repairing traffic computers maintaining and rewiring signal fixtures for vehicles and pedestrians and replacing various components such as lamps lenses and reflectors. It requires modifying and replacing cables testing and installing new equipment ensuring systems function correctly and programming controllers based on specific timing charts. The position also involves using test equipment in the field and conducting routine inspections and preventive maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications
EducationHigh School Diploma or G.E.D.
Experience
Must have 4 years of experience in the installation repair or maintenance of electrical or electronic equipment is required.
Two years of education in an electrical or electronic field may substituted for 2 years of experience; OR
an International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.)Traffic Signals II Certification may be substituted for two years of experience. A copy of your certification must be uploaded to your application.
Certifications
Must obtain an International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.) Traffic Signal II Certification within 4 years of appointment.
License Requirements
Must possess a valid drivers license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.
Within 120 days of appointment must obtain and maintain a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio. Out of state residents must have equivalent license from their state of residency within the prescribed 120 days of appointment.
General Requirements
Incumbent must be able to:
- Work underground at ground level or at heights of 30 feet
- Climb ladders into manholes or up to the deck of platform trucks
- Climb in and out of buckets on bucket vehicles with no side entry
- Pull ropes cables messengers and other items over long distances
- Perform tasks requiring strength and agility at various heights under all weather conditions
- Work under hazardous conditions with live electrical circuits and moving traffic
- Read blueprints and sketches
Background Investigation
A background investigation is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position including current city employees seeking transfer promotion demotion etc. into a classified position.
Promotional Qualifications
Must have been permanently employed full-time by the City of Dayton for 6 consecutive months in the classification of Lineworker or Line Crew Leader and be in a current pay grade below 218. Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection method.
Open Competitive Applicants
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and identity. Identical scores will be broken by a random selection method.
Notes
Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Applicants appearing on the Promotional eligible list shall be considered for appointment prior to those on the Open Competitive list.

Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
