Job Description

Introduction

** THISPOSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF MILWAUKEE EMPLOYEES ONLY**

Purpose

The Teller in the Revenue Collection Division collects andvalidates all monies due to the City of Milwaukee and performs daily balancingof all processed receipts and disbursements.

Essential Functions

Teller/Cashiering

  • Process payments through the Munis Tax System and the iNovah Cashier System for real estate and personal property taxes and special improvement bonds.
  • Collect accounts receivable and water bill payments.
  • Collect and validate receipt of all deposits presented by City departments.
  • Process garnishment fees.
  • Collect and validate license fees.
  • Audit complete prepare match and mail animal licenses.
  • Collect health dental and group life insurance premium payments.
  • Process City employee travel salary advances and reimbursements.
  • Administer disbursement for accounts payable checks for pickup items.
  • Cash payroll and personal checks for City Employees
  • Prepare a daily accounting of all cash checks and balance receipts.
  • Receive customer payments and record payment arrangements; accept payments through U.S. mail; and process payments in accordance with approved cashiering procedures.
  • Explain and clarify charges listed on bills; calculate and issue final billing statements.

Customer Service

  • Provide excellent customer service by professionally and courteously responding to customer inquiries concerning bills accounts services ongoing cases and/or policies and procedures via the telephone and in person.
  • Explain departmental policies to customers.
  • Resolve inquiries and complaints satisfactorily.

Administrative and Reporting

  • Compile and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for job functions.
  • Prepare end-of-day reports.
  • Prepare reports for City Departments regarding license fee collections accounts receivable and health insurance.
  • Perform accurate data entry of customer contact account updates problem resolution and/or documents into the departmental information system.
  • Review and prepare documents.
  • Process and send correspondence.

Conditions of Employment

  • The standard work hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. 4:45 p.m.; the Treasurers Office is open to the public from 8:15 a.m. 4:30 p.m.
  • During the current collection period December 1 February 15 employees are permitted to use (1) vacation day in the month of December and/or (1) vacation day in the month of January. Off days allowed are dependent on work load and manager discretion. (Revised on 05/30/2025)

Minimum Requirements

  1. Regular status as a City of Milwaukee employee having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position or status as a City of Milwaukee employee in a fixed-term position.
  2. Two years of full-time experience as a teller at a financial institution handling large sums of money (in excess of $10000 daily) in finance banking collections or a closely related industry.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may beconsidered.

  • Ability to perform cashiering and teller duties.

  • Ability to learn and effectively use departmental software applications such as Munis iNovah and the Microsoft Office applications.

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations quickly and with accuracy.
  • Ability to use office equipment such as cash registers check scanners calculators copiers and fax machines.
  • Ability to accurately maintain departmental records.

  • Ability to learn retain and apply work rules practices and policies while interacting with customers.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 6KN) is $49399-$58914 annually and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukeeresidents is $50881-$60681 annually.

Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisionsof the salary ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESSwill be job-related and willconsist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related educationexperience and accomplishments an evaluation of written communicationinterviews and/or other assessment methods. The City Treasurers Officereserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to proceed in theselection process. Information from the selection process will be used to makea hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted tothe position.

INITIAL FILING DATE The selection process will beheld as soon as practical after the deadline listed above. Receipt ofapplications may be discontinued at any time after this date without priornotice. However recruitment may continue until the needs of the City have beenmet. The applicant is responsible for attending all phases of the selectionprocess at the time and place designated by the hiring authority.

NOTE:Transfer/Promotional Opportunities andPromotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees orto the public. Only current City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnelin MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process who havesuccessfully passed a probationary period for a Civil Service position or whohave status as a City of Milwaukee employee in a fixed-term position will beconsidered. Individuals with exempt provisional temporary or emergencyappointments are not eligible for transfer.
