We provide services for NHS CCGs NHS Trusts and Foundation Trusts and other providers of NHS funded services. We deliver over 125000 patient interactions annually including outpatient appointments diagnostic testing and eye surgery. Our services are delivered through a variety of models including Managed Services and Ophthalmology Joint Venture (OJV) Partnerships.
ROLE SUMMARY
Ophthalmic Assistants are integral to the successful operation of the clinic. They are responsible for performing clinical tests and supporting the clinical assessment of each patient and for ensuring that all patients understand their treatment. They also have the responsibility of running/assisting in theatre ensuring that patients receive the highest quality of care and that our theatre team can perform their roles in a seamless and safe manner.
Combining a friendly and accessible personal manner with basic clinical testing skills they pride themselves in delivering great customer service and their ability to work within small teams to maintain and enhance processes to maximise quality and efficiency. No clinical knowledge is assumed (full training will be given) but intellectual curiosity is required. It is expected that the companys growth plans will provide ongoing challenges for the post-holders as well as appropriate career development opportunities.
Purpose of the role
- The Post holder will actively participate and assist with the effective and efficient delivery of a comprehensive imaging service.
- They should be able to prioritise and plan their own workload and the ability to work independently is essential.
- They will be responsible for the safe use of specialist equipment by self and others and adhere to the Health & Safety policies.
- They will be expected to deliver this service in close liaison with Nursing Medical and other staff.

- The post holder has a duty of care to patients and is expected to comply fully with company policies in particular policies relating to personal and patient safety and the prevention of healthcare associated infections.

Key Responsibilities and Professional Duties
- To provide a specialised clinical diagnostic imaging service.
- Assist in the safe use of specialist equipment by self and others and ensure that health and safety policies are adhered to at all times.
- Responsible for working within codes of practice and occupational standards.
- Responsible for the recording of clinical observations.
- Acts to maintain personal safety and security and that of others and challenge the practice of others escalating concerns.
- Ensures the full implementation of all company policies in the delivery of safe clinical care.
- Identifies potential and actual risks using the company incident reporting system in line with company policy and escalates as appropriate and contributes to investigations.
- Identifies and challenges unsafe practice and escalates appropriately to ensure a safe outcome.
- Be involved in company meetings and disseminate information and support implementation of change.
- Assists patients and in their care and treatment independently ensuring appropriate consent and agreement is gained.
- Acts as patients advocate respecting patients dignity wishes and beliefs.
- Acts within own level of competency to undertake specific interventions and treatments seeking advice and supervision.
- Acts to ensure patient safety at all times and hold self to account for decisions actions and omissions in patient care whilst maintaining a healthy safe and secure working environment.
- Ensures environment and equipment is clean and fit for purpose and ready to use.
Clinical Duties
- Maintain high professional standards of ophthalmic imaging and investigation services to patients by performing verifying and recording results of clinical testing with absolute integrity.
- Provide support and assistance to both optometrists and ophthalmologists to ensure optimal patient flow and provide a high level of patient care by performing a wide range of ophthalmology imaging.
- Assisting with minor operations
- Act as theatre runner/escort ensuring that patients receive the highest quality care and our theatre team are assisted during surgery.
- Recognise changes in observations of patient report and act on said changes.
- Maintain high levels of infection control and take appropriate action if standards arenot being met.
- Instruct patients in appropriate techniques or tasks.
- Assist Clinicians in emergency management of patients.
- Act as a chaperone.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Help patients appreciate principles of healthy living and provide literature for patients as needed.
- Transport equipment as required.
- Adhere to good record keeping.
- Working with the Registered Manager to ensure the service remains CQC compliant.
Administrative Duties
- To keep accurate patient health records updating electronic patient records or completing handwritten clinical notes.
