About Us
The Geoscience and Mines Branch of the Department of Energy and Mines studies manages and promotes mineral resources to achieve optimum economic social and environmental value from the sector. Within the Branch the Geological Survey Division includes amongst others a team of geologists largely responsible for delivering mineral resource environmental and data management/dissemination geoscience programs mineral-investment promotional activities and providing geoscience advice to government the public and mineral industry stakeholders.
About Our Opportunity
Reporting to the Director of the Geological Survey Division Geoscience and Mines Branch the Geoscience and Mining Outreach Lead will develop outreach initiatives educational programs and public engagement strategies to promote an understanding of the industrys impact and opportunities. This role will work closely with industry stakeholders educational institutions and community groups to illustrate the importance of minerals and mining in our everyday lives and to foster a positive perception of geoscience and mining. The incumbent will also take on the role of scientific editor in a part-time fulfill this part of the role the ideal candidate will have a strong background in geosciences excellent analytical skills and a keen eye for detail.
Primary Accountabilities
The primary accountabilities of the successful candidate are to lead the Branchs outreach and education programs to engage diverse audiences including students educators professionals and the public. You will create educational materials presentations and digital content to communicate complex geoscience and mining topics in an accessible way. You will manage all website updates. You will build partnerships with schools universities industry organizations and government agencies to expand outreach efforts. You will act as spokesperson for geoscience and mining addressing misconceptions and promoting industry advancements. You will be responsible to conduct community engagement initiatives to enhance public trust and awareness of responsible mining practices. As the scientific editor you will review and edit scientific publications and geological reports for language clarity structure and technical accuracy. You will ensure consistency in terminology formatting and adherence to publication guidelines.
Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in the role you must have at a minimum a . in geology earth sciences or environmental geosciences plus a minimum of 5 years experience in a geoscience related field or an . with 4 years of related experience. You must also hold a valid drivers license. A designation or to be eligible for professional designation with the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Nova Scotia would be considered an asset.
As the Outreach Lead you must demonstrate experience in outreach public engagement education and communications preferably within the geoscience and mining sector. You must have strong communication skills with the ability to simplify technical concepts for diverse audiences. Your strengths will include developing educational programs and public engagement strategies and your ability to build relationships with industry stakeholders educators and community groups. You will have a proficiency in digital content creation and public speaking and a passion for promoting science technology and responsible mining practices.
As the Scientific Editor previous experience in scientific editing publishing or technical writing is preferred. You should have a strong command of the English language and scientific writing conventions. You should have familiarity with geological terminologies research methodologies and data presentation. Ideally you will have a background in peer review processes.
To be successful in this role you must have the ability to exercise independent judgement of the highest quality as the incumbent designs and implements self-directed initiatives. You must have a proven ability to build positive and productive relationships across government and with a broad range of external stakeholders and partners. You must have a strong ability in contributing to diverse working groups across multiple sectors and be able to represent the branch professionally while building strong working relationships to support core programs. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential as well as the ability to work both independently and in a team environment. You will also have strong analytical organizational and interpersonal skills.

Working Conditions
The position requires an individual with an ability to be self-directed and able to travel for events and outreach activities. Field work may require overnight travel and/or travel by helicopter.

Salary Range: $2760.42- $3364.90Bi-Weekly
