Job Description

Authority and Responsibility of the Department Chair

As an administrator the department chair has the primary responsibility for communicating the departments views to the college community and the college community concerns to the department. The chair represents the department and serves as a leader for the entire college. As such Department Chairs must advocate for their department while also keeping the best interests of the college in mind. Department Chairs are provided with course releases as the following responsibilities require additional time. They are also given an administrative stipend as recognition of their additional responsibilities as well as compensation for work that must be conducted during the summer months. In consultation with department members the department chair has the primary responsibility and authority for:

  • Formulating and communicating recommendations for hiring tenure promotion retention and evaluation of faculty and departmental support staff.
  • Establishing departmental budget priorities and allocations.
  • Establishing regulating and monitoring faculty workloads.
  • Recommending leaves and special assignments for the Deans approval.
  • Developing and articulating departmental goals.
  • Ensuring that faculty members in the department are good citizens of the college and are fully engaged in departmental and general faculty duties.

    • Communicate to Admissions Director recommendations regarding funding
    • Review weekly reports of applicants status and compare to programs understanding
    • Communicate needs to Faculty for interviews emails etc.
    • Monitor New Student numbers during the summer
  • Organize and/or AttendOrientations and Recruiting events
  • Address QuestionsPotential students calling or visiting campus
  • AssignAdvisors
  • MonitorScholarship Awards; coordinate the application for scholarships for admitted students

  • Provide authorization for state-approved programs and credentials (e.g. authorization)
  • Foster cross-departmental collaborations (e.g. research scholarship community events etc.)

Required Qualifications

  • Appointed faculty member in MCE

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:
$13000 - $15000 annualized stipend plus course releases

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate departmental budget availability internal salary equity considerations and available market information but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
