CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the direction of the Director of Residential Communities the Assistant Director for Residential Experience. provides comprehensive and integrated support of student success of residence hall students. The Assistant Director creates and enhances leadership development and civic engagement initiatives and directs the efforts of all residence hall staff within these areas. The incumbent leads various initiatives designed to create high levels of residential student success and engagement throughout the campus. The Assistant Director directs the efforts of all residence hall staff within these areas (3-5 FTE). Through supervision of staff student support and student advocacy the Assistant Director serves as a champion for the student experience in their assigned residence halls.

This position requires availability outside of traditional business hours including evenings nights weekends as well as on-call and emergency on-call coverage.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directly supervise and further the development of 3-5 masters level Residence Hall Coordinators (RHCs) in their work to enhance student learning and support through engagement student led programs and sound management of assigned residence halls.
  • Direct and indirectly supervise an additional 10-12 RHCs related to the RLH Program Plan as well as student support and outreach via Stellic.
  • Review all incident reports generated from assigned residence halls and oversee effective case response by home Residence Hall Coordinators. Escalate highly unique and high-risk situations where appropriate.
  • Provide live-in staff members with direction in day-to-day operations management for the residence halls within scope of responsibility: Opening and closing of halls key and security systems management custodial and maintenance issues occupancy management and room change process.
    • Develop implement assess and maintain RLH Program Plan. Develop training and all necessary materials for all RLH staff to understand and implement the Program Plan.
    • Develop effective collaborations with campus partners focused on residential student engagement. Coordinate campus partner presence in the residence halls as well as opportunities for RAs to support large-scale events. Represent RLH and partner with various stakeholders on applicable initiatives.
  • Work with the Associate Director Housing Systems and Data Management to ensure technological integration of all Program Plan initiatives with StarRez.
  • Develop a plan for and cultivate relationships to expand living learning and theme communities in the residence halls. Establish necessary expectations memoranda of understanding etc. Work with Housing Operations to determine housing assignment placement and logistics. Coordinate programmatic and academic curricular efforts with partners.
  • Serve as RLH support-person for specific student populations living in special housing communities who participate in early arrival or summer pipeline programs.
  • Oversee advisor of the Resident Student Association and provide additional support as needed.
  • Lead the all recognition activities and major recognition events (e.g. end of year banquet) highlighting student and staff contributions to their residence hall communities.
  • Participate in all RLH department-wide efforts such as strategic plan goals RA Selection residence hall openings and closings and committee roles within RLH and the Division of Student Life.
  • Develop and administer assigned budgets.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters Degree in Student Affairs Counseling or related field with three years of professional experience working with college students or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Non-clinical front-line assessment and referral skills.
  • Knowledge of student support programs and services and crisis intervention techniques.
  • Familiarity with college student learning and development theories.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of equitable practices and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Experience with writing and measuring learning outcomes and assessment methods.
  • Ability to motivate develop direct and train assigned staff including coordinating and supervising work fostering a cooperative work environment and maintaining employee morale in a high stress setting
  • Ability to contribute to the creation and implementation of short and long-range department goals
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and effectively prioritize among competing needs.
  • Effective interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • Organizing and coordinating skills.
