Job Description

Job Title: Drill Instructor Paraprofessional

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Department: Assigned Campus

Reports To: Principal

Approved By: Superintendent

SUMMARY

The Drill Instructor (D.I.) Assists in supervising students assigned to the Alternative Education Program and performs responsible physical exercises and drilling of students including disciplinary guidance and security work which may sometimes be hazardous while supervising daily youth activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

GED or high school diploma

Some college preferred

EXPERIENCE:

One year experience in supervisory or management position

Four years military experience

Drill Instructor experience preferred

CERTIFICATES LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS

As required by the State of Texas

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students staff and the school community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Management and Organization

  1. Conduct physical exercise and drilling of students.
  2. Facilitate order and discipline.
  3. Participate in all physical activities within the AEP.
  4. Transport and supervise students on and off campus as needed.

Classroom Management and Organization

  1. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical social and emotional development of students.
  2. Assist in the supervision of students.
  3. Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  4. Supervise study activities.
  5. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.


Student Growth and Development

  1. Display sensitivity patience and understanding of the problems of the AEP youth.
  2. Conduct problem-solving groups as necessary.
  3. Promote atmosphere of rehabilitation in delinquent youths.
  4. Supervise A.E.P. Youth involved in community services activities.
  5. Be a positive role model for students.

Communication

  1. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students colleagues and supervisors.
  2. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues students parents and community members.
  3. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Other

  1. Keep informed of and comply with state district and school regulations and policies.
  2. Maintain confidentiality as established by the Code of Ethics.
  3. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
  4. Participate in meetings and special events as assigned.
  5. Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work meetings and appointments.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

None

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to speak fluently in both English and Spanish. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instruction and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before administrators staff students parents and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate ratio and percent; and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to walk and stand reach with hands and arm and stoop kneel crouch or crawl for prolonged periods of time. The employee is frequently required to sit talk and hear. Light to moderate lifting is required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance color vision and the ability to adjust focus. This job requires the ability to handle and balance multiple demands at the same time.

The employee must maintain emotional control under stress.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment in quiet to moderate depending upon the activity being conducted.
