***Applicants seeking short-term or full-time work with the University of Hawaii may apply for Casual Hire positions which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits provided to regular Board of Regents (BOR) and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Full time/Part time: Full-time no more than 40 hours/week

Temporary/Permanent: Temporary


Other Conditions: Casual Hire temporary appointment is expected to begin June 2025. Not to exceed 89 days.

Duties:

  1. Advising CSO officers and members on their responsibilities ensuring compliance with charters bylaws and university policies.
  2. Monitoring CSO compliance addressing any issues and updating policies including the CSO Handbook annually.
  3. Collaborating with faculty advisors student leaders and campus programs to strengthen student participation and connect classroom learning with co-curricular experiences.
  4. Serving as staff advisor for the UH Hilo Chartered Student Organizations as assigned.
  5. Acting as a resource for students faculty and staff on leadership and development initiatives.
  6. Encouraging collaboration between CSOs and Registered Independent Student Organizations (RISOs) to enhance their campus and community presence.
  7. Guiding university policies and ensuring organizations operate in alignment with Campus Center university and state regulations.
  8. Advising University Radio Hilo and student media organizations ensuring compliance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and institutional regulations.
  9. Providing training on radio broadcasting operations ethics programming and promotion.
  10. Staying informed on industry trends to support student-led media and publications.
  11. Assisting in coordinating student leadership training workshops.
  12. Manage student organization storage space and student organization supplies.
  13. Coordinate communications with student organizations leaders and advisors regarding their work.
  14. Assist student organizations with event planning including scheduling based on the academic and event calendar budgeting contracting facilities safety food and other related needs.
  15. Developing marketing strategies to promote events and encourage student participation.
  16. Providing logistical support such as securing venues AV equipment and necessary resources.
  17. May participate and provide support activities or presentations to other college programs and events such as student orientations or campus-wide events.
  18. Serves and provides leadership on divisional and university-wide committees planning efforts and programs.
  19. Working evenings and weekends as required to support student programs and events
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Journalism English Communications or Public Relations and two (2) years of professional experience with responsibilities for advising a collegiate student broadcasting/media developing training activities for students creating student broadcasting/media policies and procedures or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience that provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.


Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Functional knowledge of broadcasting/media programs station production and management
  2. Functional knowledge of principles practices and techniques in advising collegiate student broadcasting/media on policies skills terminology and technology.
  3. Functional knowledge of broadcasting/media ethics.
  4. Functional knowledge of managing a budget.
  5. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles theories federal and state laws and University rules regulations and systems associated with Chartered Student Organizations and student life programs.
  6. Practical knowledge of UH policies procedures and guidelines related to Chartered Student Organizations and student-fee funded co-curricular programs services and activities.
  7. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems identify possible causes and resolve a range of issues commonly occurring in co-curricular programs services and activities.
  8. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation write reports and procedures and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  9. Demonstrates a commitment to teamwork with students and staff while effectively establishing and maintaining relationships with internal and external organizations groups and individuals.
  10. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word-processing software.
  11. Minimum five (5) years of related professional publication experience.
