Job Summary:
The Tracked Products Engineering Heavy Structures team is seeking an Engineering Project Team Leader for Surface Rock Drills in Denison Texas. This team is responsible for the design and analysis of key structural components such as mast structures mast systems main frames and track roller frames. Engineers in this group gain valuable experience across multiple disciplines including design testing manufacturing and supplier collaboration. The selected candidate will be instrumental in guiding and mentoring engineers driving innovation and enhancing both product design and process quality.
What You Will Do:
- Lead engineering efforts for New Product Introduction (NPI) and Current/Legacy Product Improvements (CPI/NSI/Maintenance)
- Manage the design and development of major heavy structural components including mast structures mast systems main frames and track roller frames
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners on design concepts supplier engagement and internal manufacturing processes
- Oversee validation strategies including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) lab testing and field trials
- Drive a zero-defect mindset with a strong focus on product and process quality
- Ensure alignment with program timelines cost targets and quality standards
- Communicate effectively across engineering platform purchasing and manufacturing teams
- Provide technical leadership mentoring and onboarding support for team members both locally and internationally
Education requirement:
- Bachelors degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum

- Provides expert guidance on structural analysis and design of heavy structures using tools such as Creo Simulate andStructural Stressto ensure robust technical solutions.
- Collaborates with cross-functional SMEs and leveragesAPQP for design validation and issue resolution ensuring alignment with Caterpillars engineering standards.
- Mentors engineers in applyingFinite Element Analysis (FEA)andDesign for Manufacturability (DFM)principles to deliver high-quality technically sound solutions.
Influencing Through Expertise:
- Translates complex engineering concepts into actionable insights using visualizations fromCreo Parametric and Teamcenter Visualization enabling clear communication across technical and non-technical teams.
- Demonstrates deep knowledge in heavy structure design welding processes and manufacturing methods supported by hands-on knowledge withCaterpillars Global Product Development System (GPDS).
- Facilitates technical upskilling by sharing best practices and training resources withinCaterpillars Engineering Knowledge Baseand mentoring programs.
- Advocates for evidence-based decision-making using simulation data test results and historical performance metrics to support recommendations.
Team Management:
- Leads cross-functional project teams through the full product lifecycle usingMicrosoft ProjectandCaterpillars NPI (New Product Introduction) process ensuring timely delivery and lessons learned documentation.
- Utilizes Agile and Lean methodologies to maintain team engagement and productivity supported by tools likeMicrosoft Project for task tracking and collaboration.
- Aligns team objectives with business goals through regular syncs and milestone reviews ensuring cohesion and shared vision.
- Communicates effectively with internal stakeholders and external suppliers using structured reporting tools and dashboards inPower BIandSharePoint.
Product Design and Development:
- AppliesCreo ParametricCreo Simulate andStructural Stressto design and validate components for durability manufacturability and compliance with Caterpillar standards.
- Leads proof-of-concept development using rapid prototyping tools and digital mockups integrating feedback fromDFMEAandDesign Reviews.
- Provides strategic input on complex design challenges balancing performance cost and manufacturability usingDFM/AandTolerance Stack-up Analysis.
- Ensures product quality through integration ofSix Sigmamethodologies andDesign Verification Plans (DVP&R).
Top Candidates will also have:
- Strong background in Surface Rock Drill products and heavy structure design with hands-on knowledge in manufacturing processes such as welding and assembly
- Proven track record leading full lifecycle engineering programs including New Product Introduction (NPI) and Continuous Product Improvement (CPI)
- Proficiency in engineering tools and systems such as Creo Teamcenter HVC and EDS with knowledge executing APQP and performing structural FEA
- Skilled in supplier collaboration and directing global design resources to optimize manufacturability and meet design goals
- Excellent leadership communication and teamwork skills; self-motivated and customer-focused
Additional Information:
The location for this position is Denison TX.
Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position.
This position may require up to 10% travel.
