Job Description

This position is for the 2025-26 Winter Sports Season

GROUP:Atheltics

SALARY:Stipend

FLSA STATUS:Non-Exempt

SUMMARY: The Head Cheer Coach provides leadership and direction to the Cheer team enforcing all rules of the WIAA as they relate to the respective sport and is responsible for all matters pertaining to the organization and administration of the team.

ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200 tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Plans and conducts all practice sessions
  • Maintains a current and accurate squad roster at all times being sure that it is on file with the athletic director and the building principal
  • Assigns duties to the teams assistant coach and evaluates the assistant coachs performance in conjunction with the athletic director
  • Provides verification of physical exam clearances and parental permission slips on all participating student athletes prior to actual team practices/games
  • Accompanies the specified school team to school-sponsored interscholastic competitions at all times and/or assigns at least one coach to be with the squad at all times including bus transportation to and from practices and games; performs locker room supervision until all squad members have left the building; and ensures that the aforementioned areas are clean and orderly
  • Inspects all equipment oversees the issuance and collection of equipment and maintains equipment inventory records; advises the athletic director of any equipment that needs repair or certification (All equipment is the responsibility of the coach.)
  • Instructs team members regarding proper use of uniforms and equipment (Uniforms and/or equipment are to be worn for school-sponsored sporting activities only.)
  • Reports all injuries to the athletic director and fully completes injury report forms within 24 hours of the incident; personally confirms that the athlete is receiving competent medical care and that full reports have been made relative to the injury
  • Attends to injured athletes at all times or until a parent is present
  • Conducts scouting activities in compliance with applicable school and WIAA policies
  • Conducts team staff meetings to include assistant coaches and takes charge of all tryouts practices team meetings and athletic contests
  • Arranges for presentation of team awards through the athletic director and provides a roster with the recommended award winners
  • When needing volunteer coaching personnel submits a written request to the athletic director or the high school/middle school vice principal
  • Annually attends a WIAA approved rules clinic for the sport being coached or passes the WIAA approved sports rules test required of officials for the sport being coached. (Note: recommended for coaches directing middle school athletes.)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Is at least 21 years old

Possesses a high school diploma or GED

Holds a valid and current First Aid Certification card or is enrolled in a Red Cross First Aid Card training course

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Has earned a bachelors degree from an accredited college with major coursework in Physical Education Coaching or related field; or has three or more years of direct work experience as a coach of a major team sport

Has experience in coaching Native American students

Is a current employee of Chief Leschi Schools preferably a certificated employee

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

Able to maintain a successful criminal background clearance

Successful and/or clear drug screening

KNOWLEDGE OF:

School board policies and procedures

WIAA interscholastic activities policies and WIAA coaching standards

Skills involved in sport of girls basketball

ABILITY TO:

Take initiative and work independently

Communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups in a multicultural and diverse community

Work collaboratively with school and central office administrators parents and community members

Demonstrate understanding of and experience with cultural competence

Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Athletic Director or designee

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand or sit or both for long periods of time. The employee must frequently reach with hands and arms and is regularly required to talk or hear; stand and/or walk; bend stoop twist squat and kneel; and use hands to finger handle feel and perform fine motor manipulation. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 75 pounds. Anything over the weight limits should be done as a two-person lift or with a mechanical lift.

While performing the duties of this job the employee regularly works indoors occasionally near visual displays. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
