Description:

A highly qualified candidate will be well versed in Program Leadership Special Education therapeutic systems and approaches in educational settings and effective and individualized instructional and therapeutic supports and services An effective Program Director will embrace the staffs experience and pedagogical and therapeutic knowledge while also bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to the program with a collaborative supportive leadership style. The program director facilitates ongoing program support and development that aligns a continuum of robust and effective programs and services.

Program Description:

The Winthrop House Program is a part of the Public Schools of Brooklines robust continuum of therapeutic special education programs and supports. The Winthrop House Program is a public separate day school within the district for students in grades 6-12. It is located at the Driscoll Elementary School 6-8 and Brookline High School 9-12 which provides a therapeutic special education alternative for students whose social and/or emotional problems have hindered success in a traditional setting.

Winthrop House provides educational and therapeutic services in a clinical milieu to studentswho present with a combination of special education and mental health needs; in addition many have experienced trauma and other House is committed to helping students make changes in order to succeed without compromising academic standards. The entire school community is committed to helping students increase their self-esteem gain academic knowledge and develop social skills.

The director will provide strong leadership in the areas of special education and mental health. The director will understand a trauma-informed model of care in which behavioral therapeutic and educational interventions are balanced with understanding of the complex causes of students challenges. The director will work closely to create collaboration between educational mental health and related services staff to deliver integrated services to students and director is responsible for the educational development of every student within the program for supervision of Winthrop House staff for the development of strong relationships with the caregiver and mental health provider community and for participation in the special education department and school-wide leadership.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop direct and coordinate all phases of therapeutic and educational programming;
  • Responsible for the hiring management supervision and evaluation of program staff related service providers paraprofessional staff.
  • Attend all IEP meetings and other IEP-related tasks as designated by the Deputy Superintendent of Student Services
  • Support Special Education staff in curriculum instruction assessment and professional development in collaboration with Special Education Directors
  • Lead weekly department meetings with Winthrop House staff
  • Collaborate with building administration and staff to provide leadership professional development and support to ensure access to all student services and programs within general education.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with public school representatives for tuition-in students.
  • Serves as community liaison promotes therapeutic/education programs; develops and nurtures referral sources; attends meetings and other appropriate functions with key community contacts and committees.
  • Collaborate with BHS/Driscoll leadership teams as part of school wide planning
  • Develops personal and program-related skills through participation in internal and external trainingopportunities
  • May assume other district-wide responsibilities as designated by the Deputy Superintendent of Student Services.

Additional 9-12 Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead the scheduling process for all students in the program to ensure compliance with graduation requirements students adherence to the student handbook and provision of special education support and services.
  • Enact Dean responsibilities related to the discipline process and other activities related to the student handbook and code of conduct.
  • Collaborate with the BHS Director of Special Education and BHS leadership to support programs integration with Brookline High School




Required Qualifications:

  • MASS DESE Administrator of Special Education or Supervisor/Director (PPS) license required or license eligible.
  • Demonstrated ability and expertise in program administration leadership and management
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with the community including parent groups.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of Special Education state and federal regulations and laws.



Preferred Qualification:

  • Five (5) years of successful program administration and leadership teaching counseling mental health experience.
  • Preferred experience in leading therapeutic programs
  • Preferred experience in program development
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound judgments and decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with a diverse range of constituents
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate effective meetings using collaborative processes
  • Proven effectiveness in written and oral communication
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in working with students and staff.
  • Clinical Degree and License (psychologist social worker counselor LICSW LMHC LMFT PhD PsyD).
