Two-year fixed-term Research Fellow position (Academic Level B)
Based at RMITs City Campus in the heart of Melbourne
Flexible working arrangements considered including part-time
Were seeking a Research Fellow in Theoretical Quantum Physics to join the Physics discipline within RMITs School of Science. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in quantum science and mathematics specifically within the QuRMIT Theory Lab and the ARC Future Fellowship project Unifying discrete and continuous methods in quantum information theory.
Your focus will be on producing high-quality research in mathematical quantum physics contributing to RMITs leadership in quantum science and technology. This includes collaborating closely with the other members of the QuRMIT Theory Lab participating in research supervision contributing to grant applications and engaging in outreach and professional development activities. A modest teaching contribution (less than 0.1 FTE) in undergraduate or Honours-level quantum physics will also form part of the role helping build expertise and contribute to RMITs educational offerings.
At RMIT we are committed to a balanced and supportive academic culture. The expectations for this role are designed to be reasonable and sustainable with flexibility to align with your career stage and strengths.
This position is embedded within RMITs growing quantum ecosystem anchored by the RMIT Applied Quantum Technologies Centre (RAQT). RAQT is a cross-disciplinary research hub uniting experts from the School of Science and the School of Engineering. It focuses on applied industry-relevant quantum research in areas such as:
Quantum sensing navigation and timing
Quantum materials and manufacturing
Quantum computing and communication
Quantum fundamentals
RAQT serves as a front door for industry and collaborators in quantum technology to engage with RMIT researchers and plays a leading role in national and international initiatives in quantum science and technology.
You may come from a range of backgrounds in theoretical physics or mathematics with expertise aligned to the goals of the QuRMIT Theory Lab and the Future Fellowship project. We encourage applications from people with strong mathematical foundations and a passion for high-quality rigorous research in quantum theory.
Were especially interested in candidates who bring experience or potential in areas such as:
Mathematical quantum physics including quantum information theory C*-algebras von Neumann algebras and the rigorous mathematics of quantum field theory
Strong or emerging research track record demonstrated through high-quality publications collaborations and success with research funding
Contributing to a collaborative and supportive research environment including research supervision grant development and outreach activities
Strong communication skills and a collegial team-oriented approach
Commitment to scientific accuracy mathematical rigour and high-quality academic practice
