Job Description
Ducks Unlimitedthe worlds leader in waterfowl and wetland conservationis seeking an experienced and collaborative waterfowl ecologist to join our team of scientists dedicated to advancing the science that underpins our conservation mission. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in waterfowl and wetland ecology across North America demonstrated analytical capabilities and a commitment to critical thinking and scientific inquiry. A clear appreciation for the role of hunters in supporting DUs mission and the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation is essential.
The successful applicant will bring diverse experience in conducting or leading waterfowl research and applying scientific results to conservation planning and habitat delivery. The ability to translate technical findings into accessible language for public policy and philanthropic initiatives is critical. Success in securing competitive research funding through grant writing is highly desirable. We seek someone eager to support DUs communications and outreach promote waterfowl science and engage with the broader conservation community. This position will also contribute to science and policy efforts of national and international scope working alongside DU staff across the U.S. Canada and Mexico. Overall the successful applicant will be expected to achieve visibility and recognition as a scientific leader in the North American waterfowl management community.
Primary Responsibilities
This position will lead and contribute to research that informs landscape-scale conservation and addresses emerging issues affecting waterfowl and their habitats (e.g. renewable energy highly pathogenic avian influenza). The scientist will work closely with DUs regional science teams to synthesize existing data or develop innovative approaches to assess landscape change in DUs highest priority areas. Additionally this position will have the opportunity to help develop and lead innovative large-scale research projects that transcend organizational and jurisdictional boundaries. Collaboration with internal teamsPolicy Development Communications and Fundraisingis expected to help fulfill diverse information needs.
The position will also support DUs robust internship and graduate assistantship programs by providing mentorship and leadership across a range of projects including hunter-assisted science (e.g. duckDNA). Additional opportunities exist to evaluate ecosystem service outcomes from DUs conservation work. Given DUs alignment with the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) this role includes engagement with the NAWMP community and participation on technical committees at regional national and international levels.
Qualifications
A masters degree or PhD (preferred) in wildlife biology ecology or a related field with a strong focus on waterfowl ecology is required along with at least five years of relevant professional or graduate-level research experience. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who thrives in a collaborative team environment butis also capable of independent thinking creative problem-solving and sound decision-making. Strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication are essential. Advanced expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: quantitative ecology animal movement ecology GIS or remote sensing.
Reporting and Location
This position will report to the Senior Waterfowl Scientist and be located at Ducks Unlimiteds National Headquarters in Memphis Tennessee where they will have opportunities to engage with senior leadership and participate in interdepartmental collaborations.
