Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the enforcement of animal control ordinances.

Essential Functions:

  • Cleans facilities and equipment.
  • Supply animals with food and water.
  • Patrols the streets for stray violations and injured or dead animals.
  • Answers inquiries from the public concerning animal control techniques.
  • Educates the general public concerning animal welfare control laws and a regulations.
  • Examines licenses and inspects establishments housing animals for compliance with laws.
  • Captures and removes stray or abused animals from undesirable conditions using nets nooses or tranquilizer darts.
  • Examines animal for injuries or illnesses.
  • Prepares reports of activities including impoundments and dispositions of animals.
  • Contact owners to report impounded animals.
  • Collects pound fees.
  • Issues warnings or citations.
  • Prepares for prosecutions related to animal treatment; testifies in court.
  • Investigate reports of animal attacks; collects evidence and writes reports.
  • Assists in the adoption of unclaimed animals.
  • Euthanizes rabid unclaimed or severely injured animals.
  • Maintains required telecommunications contact testify in court as necessary emergency call service nights and weekends.
  • Housekeeping facility duties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship / internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid drivers license issued by the State of Texas for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Basic Animal Control Officer Certification by the Department of Health preferred. (Or ability to obtain certification within timeframe by department.)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting standing
stooping walking bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts moderately heavy (20-50 pounds)
items and occasionally very heavy (100 pounds or over) items. Employee may be required to climb ladders
and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

The employee is regularly required to have full range of mobility in upper and lower body. The employee
occasionally frequently lifts and/or moves light objects up to 10 pounds and heavier objects up to 25 pounds
and climbs ladders. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color
vision and peripheral vision. Specific auditory abilities required by the job include the ability to hear and speak
effectively and to function adequately to ensure the requirements of job are met.
