TITLE: Special Education Teacher (Dual Certified in Mathematics)
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the school principal the Special Education teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities. The person in this position is responsible for providing specialized mathematics instruction for students with disabilities such that the students benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with supplemental aid accommodation and other needed supports.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment.
- Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized andsmall group instruction and student learning.
- Develops and administers Mathematicscurriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Follow all policies rules and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates.
- Oversee pupil behavior in class and surrounding areas and maintain normal classroom routines and discipline within the classroom.
- Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies in accordance with the students IEP.
- Instruct students using a variety of literary genres and employ strategies to develop high level comprehension and problem-solving skills
- Teach and reinforce acceptable social/skills and classroom behaviors through the use positive behavioral supports.
- Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining a safe learning environment for all students.
- Provide crisis intervention as needed for students and those in small group classrooms.
- Experience teaching Mathematics at 8-12 levels per the Massachusetts Frameworks
- Experience working with students with social/emotional needs required.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries with students staff and parents.
- Plans a program of study that as much as possible meets the individual needs interests and abilities of the students.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of established district curriculum goals establishes and communicates clearobjectives to the students for all lessons units and projects.
- Maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping grading andattendance as required.
- Maintains an ongoing program of professional growth that satisfies district requirements but also satisfies personal expectations as a professional.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and administers standardized tests in accordance with district and state testing requirements.
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy as well asdifferentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Experience teaching within a therapeutic school and/or classroom preferred
- Adheres to the adopted policies of the Bellingham School Committee.
SKILLS/ABILITY:
- Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level or discipline preferred.
- Must be a person of professional and personal integrity.
- A high degree of patience and tact in dealing with the general public parents teachers administrators prospective teachers and other personnel.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
CERTIFICATES LICENSES and/or DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:
- MA DESE Moderate Disabilities Required and MA DESE Mathematics 5-12 Preferred.
- While dual certification is mandatory applicants will be considered who hold one of the required licenses provided they demonstrate a willingness to obtain the other necessary certification.
- Bachelors from an accredited college or university
- Masters degree preferred.
SALARY: Per BTA Contract
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
You are required to be physically capable of escorting students from the building in case of a practice drill or emergency situation in a safe and timely fashion.
Must be able to move about the classroom and have the ability to bend sit or stand frequently.
