Job Description

Position Function:

The Deputy Director at the Mississippi State University (MSU) Athlete Engineering Institute (AEI) will establish synergistic interactions with the current Executive Director of AEI to contribute to strategic decisions funding pursuit directions and infrastructure building regarding AEI. The Deputy Director will identify priorities for research capability growth outline technical strategies and oversee a highly motivated staff consisting of research engineers research associates research professors tenure track faculty teaching and clinical faculty and undergraduate and graduate students. The Deputy Director will take on funded project work as needed and will support the Executive Director in identifying engaging and supporting the needs of any faculty postdoctoral researchers and graduate students to ensure projects related to their research are successful.

Department Profile:

The mission of athlete engineering is to align researchers from all engineering disciplines as well as kinesiology sociology and psychology researchers with athletic practitioners such as strength and conditioning coaches athletic trainers and nutritionists to enhance student-athlete safety and link human factors to performance technology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assist Executive Director in development and implementation of Athlete Engineering human factors and human performance solutions that meet MSU faculty graduate and undergraduate research needs.
2. Establish internal and external partnerships with other centers/institutes and college/departmental management to provide related and preferably funded support meeting human factors and human performance research needs.
3. Develop train and mentor team members; identify and develop emerging leaders.
4. Assist with external and internal audit agencies to ensure regulatory compliance.
5. Assist in the development and execution of the annual strategic planning and budget.
6. Make recommendations regarding recruitment promotion and retention of team members.
7. Manage specific research projects and the creation of new athlete persona offerings.
8. Assist and lead the pursuit of national and state agency funding as well as funding from other sectors such are industry projects military task orders and Foundational opportunities.
9. Actively seek collaborative partners to explore extramural funding opportunities for new and innovative human factors and human performance projects.
10. Participate and contribute to the planning development and management of research technology outreach at AEI.
11. Assist in leading and managing matrixed teams for accomplishing human factors and human performance projects and producing timely deliverables.
12. Critically examine traditional models and frameworks when appropriate adopt emerging solutions to deliver innovative and efficient results.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.
This position has supervisory responsibility for AEI personnel and directly supervises trains develops and evaluates AEI staff. This position oversees human factors and human performance technology projects and solutions in providing AEI task and technology solution options to researchers.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum education required is a Bachelor degree with a focus in Human factors human performance human physiology engineering or technology degree associated with human factors and/or performance

Experience required - 8 Directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility for access to classified information. Must be a U.S Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD and 10 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Experience supporting an existing center or institute specializing in human factors human performance technology and data science.
Experience working directly with athletic sports teams at the D1 level of collegiate sports and/or professional sports leagues.
Extensive experience in military industry or competitive sports environments supporting human factors engineering or human performance technology efforts.
Previous leadership experience in a military industry or sports performance environment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated ability to lead motivate develop and train large teams.
Ability to establish institute-wide goals and objectives that support the strategic plan.
Ability to lead and think strategically.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Knowledge of business and management principles.
Ability to successfully write and win competitive proposals.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

No unusual physical requirements. Requires limited lifting of files and records and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
Frequent external imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond ones control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.
