THE RECRUITMENT RANGE FOR THIS POSITION IS FROM $84353 to $126529. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidates education and experience related to the position as well as our agency budget and equity.


This position is in the Information Technology Division.

The Department of Justice Information Technology Division is responsible for the design development and deployment of new business applications and continuous support of existing applications for the Department of Justice. The Division is responsible for supporting all networking associated with theDOJcomputers for assessing needs for required hardware and system products needed to support the infrastructure and for operating a Customer Support Center (CSC). The infrastructure is a mission critical environment supporting the Department and criminal justice users. The Division is constantly engaged in research and planning to position its environment to be consistent with North Carolinas statewide technical architecture as well as mandates from the General Assembly.

The purpose of this position is to enhance the security efforts of the entire Department. The Department needs an experienced individual to focus on all elements of cybersecurity. The Department of Information Technology officially adopted the NIST Risk Management Framework as the state standard for managing risk and security.


Cybersecurity addresses application security information security network security disaster recovery with business continuity planning and operational security. The nature of todays security risks are constantly changing and evolving and creating a new/separate position enables greater separation of duties from security and operational activities with a focus on cybersecurity.

  • This position works to supervise and manage the development of an NIST 800-53 based security program necessary to ensure the safety of information systems and to protect the system from intentional (unauthorized) or accidental (inadvertent) access or destruction. This position provides reports and documentation as required by the legislature to the Department of Information Technology.

  • Position works with the CIO and the Infrastructure Manager to identify and implement security risk and mitigation plans for the wired and wireless operations including data software applications hardware telecommunications and computer installations.

  • This position is responsible for evaluating security exposures and threats to determine the level of security necessary to protect the systems utilized by the Department.

  • This position is responsible for security measures such as firewalls intrusion detection/prevention systems content filtering and other security devices or software as required. They will work with IT managers to determine appropriate security policies for application and operational resources.

  • This position will work with the CODIS Administrator to provide security design management and recommendations for the CODIS implementation of the State Crime Laboratory.

  • This position will oversee a comprehensive incident response program providing prompt response to detected security threats and breaches.

  • Position analyzes security needs based on the data classification and provides implementation guidance to meet all required Department and state policies including system security review for new and existing systems.

  • The position will provide network configuration implementation and maintenance and assist with fault escalation communication to the Department.

  • The position will assist with the development of the IT Departments Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity plan.

Department Information:
The North Carolina Department of Justice led by the Attorney General of North Carolina represents the state state agencies and elected officials and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab the North Carolina Justice Academy and the Sheriffs and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience with secure networking technologies such as firewalls EDR and/orIDS/IPS technologies VLANs and/orACLs.

  • Experience with MS 365 security and/or MS 365 compliance center.

  • Experience performing or supporting information security threat assessments and/or audits.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in computer science or a related IT field or related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressive experience in IT Security or closely related area; or

Associate degree in computer science or a related IT field or related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in IT Security or closely related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Management Preferences: Current nationally recognized certification CompTIA Security CISSP and or CISA
