Description

The Team
The Radio Communications Program is a specialized province-wide team within the Natural Resource Ministries that maintains and supports critical radio communications infrastructure used by field staff for safety emergency coordination and operational communications. The team consists of 20 Radio Communications Technologists who are committed to ensuring reliable communications in some of BCs most remote and challenging environments.

The Role
This exciting opportunity supports the maintenance and installation of radio communications equipmentsuch as repeater sites mobile units and base stationsto ensure frontline staff have dependable communication tools year-round. The role offers a mix of technical work field operations and travel by vehicle and aircraft playing a vital part in public safety and emergency response support.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • A Diploma from a recognized 2-year Electronics Technologist program (This program is accredited at the level of Engineering Technologist by the Applied Science Technologists and Technologists of British Columbia) or equivalent and 2 years of related experience as a technologist in the radio communications field
  • An equivalent combination of education training and experience may also be considered.

Related experience must include 3 or more of the following:

  • Radio frequency system design which includes VHF UHF and RF (Radio Frequency) communications principles and practices data communications wireless and ground-based protocols which include radio and wireless communications systems and components corrective solutions for Radio Frequency intermodulation and electromagnetic interference.
  • IP (Internet Protocol) Suite including TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) IP(IPv4 and IPv6) UDP (User Datagram Protocol) DCCP (Datagram Congestion Control Protocol) DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and Voice over IP and Radio over IP.
  • Power systems and distribution including 120 Volt AC and 12 Volt DC wiring solar and charging systems grounding.
  • Reading interpret schematics topographical maps and other technical information.
  • Surface mount multi-layer soldering methods and soldering with microscopes.
  • Preparing personal computers windows operating systems to configure for communications needs.
  • Instructing users on the capabilities and operation of radio equipment and systems.

  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Drivers license.
  • Must be physically fit and mentally compatible with the work involved and be able to work under the rigors of the job.
  • Must be physically able to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
  • May be required to operate field equipment (i.e. ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) snowmobile).
  • Must be willing to travel within British Columbia as the job requirement dictates; Out of province is voluntary.
  • Must be willing to conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle boat aircraft (including helicopters) or foot.
  • Will be required to work extended hours including weekends and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
  • Will be required to travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  • Must be willing to be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities assignments and corporate structures.
  • Must have the appropriate technical training. Must become certified in transportation of dangerous goods and industrial level one first aid and take in-house training and certification as required.
  • Must be able to climb towers and take training on personal fall protection systems to become certified in tower climbing and tower rescue.

2 positions available. One position in Cranbrook and 1 position in Nanaimo
