THE STARTING SALARY FOR THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $87849 - $103184.Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidates education and experience related to the position as well as our agency budget and equity.


This attorney will work with the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and with the North Carolina Sheriffs Education and Training Standards Commission. The attorney attends the Commissions meetings advises them on a wide range of legal issues and represents them in civil and administrative proceedings including officer decertification cases and state and federal civil litigation against the Commissions.


This attorney also will prepare and try criminal cases of every nature and complexity. The attorney assigned to a particular case must independently prepare and conduct the trial with a high level of expertise. In addition to criminal jury trials the attorneys in this section handle motions for appropriate relief of every nature and complexity.


The attorney is responsible for providing day-to-day legal advice for police departments sheriffs offices and other law enforcement agencies across the State on a day-to-day rotational basis with other attorneys assigned to the Section. This attorney devotes a substantial portion of his time to answering these inquiries for legal assistance and advice. The requests for legal advice involve numerous and varied areas of law to include: (1) Arrests; (2) Search and Seizure; (3) Elements of Criminal Offenses; (4) Civil Liability; (5) Courtroom Security; (6) Civil Process; (7) Motor Vehicle Laws; (8) Personal Matters; (9) Criminal Procedure; (10) Emergency Vehicle Operation; (11) Use of Deadly Force; (12) Jurisdiction of Various Law Enforcement Agencies and other legal issues too numerous to include herein.


Some travel including some overnight stays are required.

Selected candidate will undergo a background and records check.

The salary grade for this position is LG08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY or MAY NOT result.

Division Information:

The Special Prosecutions and Law Enforcement Section supports and provides legal advice to District Attorneys and law enforcement across the State in addition to representing the State of North Carolina in both criminal and civil litigation.


Department Information:

TheNorth Carolina Department of Justice led by the Attorney General of North Carolina represents the state state agencies and elected officials and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally the Department of Justice includes theNorth Carolina State Crime Lab theNorth Carolina Justice Academy and theSheriffsandCriminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and three years of progressively responsible professional legal experience. NOTE: GS 114-2 and 114-6 make it the duty of the Attorney General of NC to represent the State of North Carolina in all litigation unless another statute specifically states otherwise.

Applicants seeking Veterans Preference must attach a copy of their DD-214 or discharge orders.


Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS) if you are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing. If you are a former member of the NC National Guard who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions you must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22.
