What Youll Do

  • Performs specialized scientific and technical functions related to analytical chemistry and environmental radiochemistry including laboratory data verification validation interpretation QA/QC and management of laboratory contracts. Provides scientific support required for environmental and waste sampling data acquisition and technical services programs. Functions as subject matter expert for analytical and radiochemistry. Also performs database entry retrieval and sorting of various environmental information. Interfaces extensively with other Departments within Pantex and external Pantex customers (e.g. other DOE/NNSA sites). Plans and conducts activities involving the acquisition of high quality analytical laboratory data including QA/QC oversight and application of knowledge covering environmental chemistry analytical methods and instrumental analysis. Interacts with the Pantex laboratory and external contractor laboratories. Includes performance of assessments associated with environmental and analytical administrative field sampling activities and data quality. Performs duties with the expectation for exercise of initiative independent judgment and discretion under general supervision. Is accountable for the results of actions taken.
  • This position requires the ability to conduct routine activities or research involving analytical chemistry and radiochemistry with complete understanding and application of principles concepts practices and standards; ability to read and interpret technical and scientific specifications and reports; knowledge of computers. Ability to evaluate and present environmental and chemical data through use of Microsoft Access Excel and Word; ability to enter retrieve and sort data in an Oracle database. Ability to effectively communicate scientific concepts to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences using verbal and written communication skills. Ability to interpret customer requirements and write technical specifications and procedures to ensure instrumentation output accuracy and statistical precision; ability to manage small projects including the scheduling of work priorities interpretation of test results and the ability to independently and accurately organize and track test data ensuring work is completed on schedule and within budget satisfying all quality assurance records management safety and environmental compliance requirements. Ability to perform and/or manage contractors that perform laboratory audits. Prefer familiarity with various environmental regulations including CERCLA and RCRA. Experience developing Microsoft Access applications and creating or editing a Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) module a plus.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelors degree with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience. Typical experience ranging from 10 to 15 years.
  • Masters degree with a minimum 6 years of relevant experience. Typical experience ranging from 10 to 15 years.
  • PhD with a minimum 3 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in engineering/science discipline (chemistry preferred): Minimum 7 years of relevant experience. MS in engineering/science with 6 years of relevant experience.
  • An equivalent combination of related education and experience with at least 10 years of experience in chemical laboratory analysisor analytical laboratory QA/QC preferred.
  • 4 years or more of experience in support of environmental remediation long-term stewardship or similar field.
  • Working knowledge of environmental remediation systems associated with the remediation and closure of environmental contamination release sites.
  • Ability to:
    • Review and analyze cost accruals earned value and cost/schedule variances to determine root cause.
    • Evaluate obtain and effectively use external subcontract resources to ensure work is completed on schedule and within budget satisfying all technical specifications quality assurance records management.
  • Present information clearly and effectively through the oral and written word to include regulatory and DOE-required reports and statements of work.
  • Perform duties while exercising initiative independent judgment and discretion under limited supervision.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
