Position: Special Education Coteaching Specialist

Work Location:Glendale Middle School

Contract Days: 185 Days

FTE: 1.0

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary: Certified Schedule #19

Benefits: Eligible

Anticipated Start Date: 08/12/2025 (USBE Professional Development days may occur in July and August)

*This is a grant-funded position for 3 years. Continuation of this position beyond June 2028 is based on additional funding.

JOB SUMMARY

This position provides sustained comprehensive and differentiated support to middle school educators at the school level to improve academic behavioral social emotional and other skills of students with disabilities. Coteaching specialists support educators by building the capacity of K-12 general education and special education teachers in a coteaching setting using district-adopted resources research-based strategies data analysis reflection and action for the continuous improvement of teaching and learning.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Valid Professional Utah Special Educator License and Special Education endorsement or a valid Special Educator License from another state that is transferrable to Utah.
  2. ESL endorsement or will obtain within 4 years of initial employment with the District.
  3. At least three (3) years of coteaching or other leadership experience with adults (i.e. mentoring department lead or chair grade level team lead).
  4. At least five (5) years of licensed special education classroom teaching experience.
  5. Extensive data analysis experience with grade level school district and state assessments.
  6. Professional communication skills including but not limited to: excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; confident articulate and professional speaking abilities; and empathic listening and persuasive speaking skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience developing and presenting professional development.
  2. Experience in facilitating and participating in IEP development and implementation.
  3. Spanish Speaker: speaks reads writes and understands spoken Spanish.
  4. Have an ESL endorsement or will obtain one within 4 years of hire.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  1. Demonstrates an understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity.
  2. Provides teachers with a range of strategies and resources to meet diverse learning strengths and needs.
  3. In modeling strategies that represent an equity mindset helps to remedy practices that cause the achievement gap in diverse populations.
  4. Creates environments that support individual and collaborative learning and reflective practice based on respect and trust.
  5. Engages in regular communication in an honest and non-judgmental manner with all stakeholders that ensures a coherent system of support.
  6. Engages teachers in the central concepts tools of inquiry and structures of the discipline by: demonstrating knowledge of current content and pedagogical research; aligning practice with district priorities and programs; and providing guidance on the effective use of instructional materials appropriate pacing and student grouping.
  7. The specialist identifies and analyzes multiple sources of evidence of teacher practice (e.g. classroom instruction lesson plans teacher-made assessments) and of student learning (e.g. student work interim assessment progress monitoring) and uses this information to support teachers in professional growth resulting in high levels of student achievement.
  8. Analyzes effective structured methods of observation and feedback within the coaching cycle and partners with the co-teachers and other educators to prioritize areas of growth.
  9. Assist educators in analyzing data to inform instructional adjustments.
  10. Engage in instructional coaching cycles with educators to build capacity for improved classroom instructional practices.
  11. Effectively partner with educators using principles of adult learning to integrate professional learning into classroom practice.
  12. Leverage knowledge of the science of reading and evidence-based practices to support educators in maximizing student learning.
  13. Collaborate with a schools leader to support school-wide literacy goals to provide a team of support for educators to embed the state-wide goals into instructional plans and practice.
  14. Create and provide consistent and frequent job-embedded professional learning.
  15. Design and facilitate relevant and cohesive professional learning sessions to strengthen the implementation of these evidence-based practices with educators.
  16. Participate actively in professional learning experiences to deepen knowledge and skills for coaching.
  17. Is responsible for compliance with all requirements of State Board of Education Rule R277-515 Utah Educator Professional Standards.
  18. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements in an efficient and effective manner; required to attend activities events and meetings outside of normal work hours on a regular basis.
  19. Maintain professional workplace etiquette and represents the department/district in a professional manner; communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers students parents and other district employees.
  20. Demonstrates adaptability and understanding of cultural differences in working in a diverse environment while coping with stressful situations related to students and maintaining confidentiality.
  21. Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective operations of the school.

WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Risks found in the typical work environment which is adequately lighted heated and ventilated e.g. safe use of office equipment avoiding trips and falls observing fire regulations.
  2. Typically the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work: however there may be some walking standing bending carrying light items etc
