$21.60 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY

CHEO is participating in a Ministry of Health initiative to hire Clinical Externs through the Enhanced Extern Program. This transitional program was developed to support human resources and to provide an opportunity for students to their knowledge develop important skills for a career in health care gain patient care experience and work with and learn from our allied health teams. Clinical Externs are employed as unregulated care providers (UCP) working under the direction and supervision of a Physiotherapist (PT) to enhance and effectively support the safety and quality of patient care. This program is currently open to Physiotherapy (P)T students who are completing their 2nd year of study in a training program accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) and Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC).

The program is designed to provide supernumerary support as Clinical Externs do not replace staff or staffing shortages.

The Clinical Extern Program will:

  • Provide valuable pediatric clinical experience to student and PTs.

  • Promote ongoing recruitment and retention of Physiotherapy professionals.

  • Enhance the care provided to patients by utilizing a collaborative care delivery model.

  • Profile CHEO as an employer of choice and destination for subsequent post-grad Physiotherapists positions.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

The Clinical Extern will work with the PT team as a UCP under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a PT. Clinical Externs will work in a manner consistent with organizational policies and professional standards while considering College of Physiotherapists Ontario (CPTO) guidance for UCPs. The Clinical Externs clinical growth is supported by clinical mentors who promote self-reflective practice through coaching feedback and mentorship. The Clinical Extern is a transitional role whereby students develop clinical expertise specialty knowledge and self-confidence as they move from a student to a Physiotherapy role.

The Clinical Extern works alongside the patient care teams and obtains coaching feedback and mentorship while performing the following clinical tasks:

  • Responsible and accountable for the provision of patient care under the supervision of a regulated health professional (RHP) assigned to them in a manner consistent with organizational policies and professional standards while considering the limitations placed on the position.

  • Works with the supervising RHP to ensure that the incumbent has the knowledge skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties such as assisting with ambulation toileting bathing feeding and other care activities necessary in meeting the patients personal needs and comfort.

  • Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever needed and alerts team members when any change or concern about the patients condition is raised.

  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

  • Assists PT equipment: cleaning preparation and organization.

  • Assists with PT lead quality improvement initiatives.

  • Assisting with procedures comfort positioning and non-pharmacological pain management (e.g.-comfort care distraction play therapy).

  • Performs other duties as .

COMMITMENT

  • Clinical externs are expected to maintain a minimum working hours of (45 hours in a 6-week period which is approximately 7.5 hours per week) during the academic year. Some variation and flexibility in scheduling exists.

  • Clinical extern shifts are typically 3.75 7.5 or 11.25 hours in length (days evenings weekends). Some variation and flexibility in shift length may exist.

  • OT and PT Clinical Externs must be flexible to work in both inpatient and outpatient settings. OT and PT clinical extern roles and responsibilities may overlap.


QUALIFICATIONS

Currently enrolled in and/or have completed one of the following:

  • Enrolled in 2nd year of study in a training program accredited by the Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC) (Essential)

  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification (Essential)

  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills in English. (Essential)

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to understand interpret and carry out written and verbal instructions (Essential)

  • Effective communication skills to provide ongoing support and care for diverse patients and communicate any concerns or changes in the patients condition. (Essential)

  • Ability to respond to physical demands (e.g. heavy lifts and transfers) (Essential)

  • Basic knowledge of Routine Practices and Infection Control. (Essential)

  • Flexible hours including evening and weekend work may be .

  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) (Essential)

  • Bilingualism (French/English) (Preferred)

Effective March 29 2021 CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process. This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test practical exam or other assessment. All candidates who meet the essential and preferred qualifications may be tested. Bilingualism (French/English) will be validated by a language proficiency assessment conducted by a third-party provider. Candidates will be to meet the minimum linguistic profile prior to the date of hire.

Les stagiaires cliniques sont embauchs titre de prestataires de soins non rglements (PSNR) et travaillent sous la direction et la supervision dune ou dun physiothrapeute afin de rehausser et dassurer la scurit et la qualit des soins des patientes et patients de manire efficace. Ce programme est actuellement ouvert aux tudiantes et tudiants en physiothrapie qui terminent leur deuxime anne dtudes dans un programme de formation accrdit par lAgrment de lenseignement de la physiothrapie au Canada (AEPC).

La ou le stagiaire clinique travaillera avec une quipe de physiothrapeutes en tant que prestataire de soins non rglements (PSNR) sous la supervision directe et indirecte dune ou dun physiothrapeute. La personne titulaire de ce poste se conformera aux politiques organisationnelles et aux normes professionnelles tout en tenant compte des directives de lOrdre des physiothrapeutes de lOntario pour les (PSNR). Des mentores et mentors cliniques soutiennent lpanouissement en milieu clinique des stagiaires cliniques et favorisent une pratique rflexive et autocritique en ayant recours lencadrement la rtroaction et au mentorat. Le rle de stagiaire clinique en est un de transition. Il permet aux tudiantes et tudiants dacqurir un savoir-faire clinique des connaissances de spcialit et de la confiance en leurs propres habilets pendant la transition du statut dtudiante ou dtudiant celui de physiothrapeute.
