JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION
JOB SUMMARY: The person holding this position under the supervision of the Director of Transportation is responsible for assisting the Director with the coordination of all aspects of the Transportation Department including routing training safe bus operation the investigation of complaints and accidents and performance evaluation. This position will provide input guidance training scheduling and feedback as a part of the overall planning and operations of the Transportation Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Routing:
- Coordinate all aspects of routing software and design to include but not limited to: maintain expert-level knowledge of the current system; establish a system of cross-training ensuring back-up routing support; serve as a liaison with the IT department and local officials in regards to maps; and ongoing evaluation of current softwares cost effectiveness and ability to perform needed functions.
- Develop coordinate implement and maintain safe and efficient regular education special education and inclement weather routing using established District guidelines and electronic routing system; collaborate with District personnel to safely respond to changes in the weather road construction student activities and bell schedules.
- Evaluate at multiple checkpoints throughout the year and modify routes as needed considering District route design guidelines route path stop locations blind corners narrow roads safe crossings traffic density road obstacles and efficiencies.
- Secure substitute and utility bus drivers as needed.
- Coordinate the special services functions of the department of transportation to include: effectively communicate with the special services department in a liaison role; effectively establish and evaluate equitable and efficient routes for students with special needs both during the school year and during the summer in accordance with the students IEP; evaluation of drivers and monitors assigned to special needs routes; coordination with internal and external stakeholders to provide relevant specialized training.
- Develop and implement processes and routines to meet the daily requirements for route transportation; student activities; and school functions (e.g. student maintenance professional development etc.).
- Assist the Director in the development of a plan to effectively communicate with all stakeholders (e.g. parents students administrators staff pickup times drop off times designated routes etc. before the school year starts as well as any changes made throughout the school year.
Department/Personnel:
- Collaborate with internal and external customers (e.g. school personnel including administrators transportation staff. teachers and support staff; local state and federal agencies; parents and
- community representatives and vendors); communication may include in person in writing telephone email or radio.
- Assist the Director by collecting and organizing and information necessary to evaluate and resolve concerns of patrons school administrators and activity sponsors as they relate to arrival times departure times ride times and assignment of drivers.
- Assist the Director to regularly prepare and analyze reports of fuel consumption bus utilization mileage equipment and supply inventory maintenance and repair activities and payroll expenses.
- Perform personnel functions (e.g. interviewing evaluating supervising counseling disciplining directing training recruitment retention payroll support etc.).
- Respond to emergency situations in the absence of the Director during and after standard working hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
- Assist the Director in developing an on-going in-service and training program for drivers. and staff regarding safety student management and interpersonal skills.
- In the absence of the Director conduct investigations in cooperation with District local and state agencies to determine the cause of transportation accidents; in cooperation with District administrators consider all information and factors associated with an accident and develop an effective internal and external response.
- Provide support as a route driver as needed
- Serve as the Director of Transportation in the absence of the Director
EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelors Degree preferred; Certification as a Bus Driver Instructor (preferred or willing to be certified)
- 3 years of successful experience working in a transportation setting; school setting preferred
- CDL/School Bus License or the willingness and ability to obtain is required; Excellent driving record.
- Strong interpersonal skills to include written communication verbal communication organization and conflict resolution skills.
- Organizational skills basic mathematical skills basic computer skills and communication skills are an essential part of this job.
- Ability required to schedule a number of activities meetings and/or events; gather collate and analyze data: and consider a variety of factors when using equipment or overseeing the use of equipment.
- Demonstrate technical and comprehensive knowledge of computerized routing systems software and hardware; demonstrate ability to communicate using two-way radio cellular devices and other technology.
- As allowable by state and federal guidelines obtain and maintain appropriate licenses and certifications as related to school bus inspections and driver/ instructor training.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
- Responsible for responding and/or directing a response to road calls regarding disabled vehicles (e.g. part or on-call team whenever vehicles are dispatched) for the purpose of coordinating emergency repair work providing safe alternatives to stranded staff and/or students and vehicle transport.
- Will be required to regularly stand walk. and stoop: kneel crouch or crawl. The job generally requires 45% sitting 25% walking and 30% standing.
- Must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
- May experience constant interruptions inflexible deadlines and changes to normal routines.
- The noise level in this environment is quiet to loud; exposed to the general conditions of working in both an office and a shop environment.
- The work environment may vary from extremely cold to extremely hot depending on the activity and the season.
- The demands of an extended workday require a high level of physical endurance.
- In-district and out-of-town travel is required as necessary for training and/or to carry out duties and responsibilities.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- 251 day administrator contract 8 hours per day (1.90 ratio)
- Generous Leave Program: 10 days of sick leave; 3 days of personal leave; 3 days of annual leave; 10 days of vacation leave (opportunity to increase to 15 within 10 years); summer flex schedule; sick leave sharing program; and 5 days of bereavement.
