TITLE

AutomotiveMechanic II

JOBSUMMARY

Performs skilled work in the diagnosis maintenance and repair of automobiles bussestrucks tractors emergency generators mowers golf carts utility vehicles and other related equipment. Performs duties in the safe operation of a motor vehicleand the transportation of individuals. Work is performed under minimalsupervision and performance is based upon completion of assignments and results performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and inaccordancewith the UniversityPolicies & Procedures.

ORGANIZATIONALRELATIONSHIPS

Supervises:Nosupervisoryresponsibilities

ESSENTIALDUTIES-Mayincludebutnotlimited tothefollowing:

  • Replaces and/or repairscomponents suchasenginestransmissionsordifferentials motors pumps and electrical partsusing hand tools as well as pneumatic and electric power tools such as jacks lifts hoists presses welders grinders impact guns and air ratchets etc.
  • Disassembles various components toinspect forwear.
  • Diagnoses and repairs vehicles and various equipment (tractors mowers golf carts utility vehicles chain saws pallet jacks forklifts man lifts etc).
  • Performs State inspections for eligible assets as required.
  • Relinesandadjusts brakesandreplaces shockabsorbers.
  • Rewiresignitionsystems lights andinstrument panel.
  • Performs routine inspections replenishes fluids and replaces parts as necessary to assure efficient and effective performance of all generators throughout the University.
  • Drivesuniversitybusestrucksvansandcarsasassigned.
  • Operatesmechanicalorhydraulic controls intheoperationofthevehicle.
  • Checksandmaintainsallfluidlevels ofvehicle.


  • Maintains and is accountable for assigned tools and equipment.
  • Obeysallcitystate andfederaldrivingregulations.
  • Performsscheduledpreventivemaintenanceof all university ownedvehiclesandequipment.
  • Observesprescribedwork and safetyrules.

ADDITIONALDUTIES

  • Assistswiththemaintenanceof Universityvehiclerecords.
  • Maintains accurate inventory records and replenishes as needed.
  • Securesbidsonspecializedshopworksuchasbodyrepairingpainting andupholstering.
  • Maintains a clean shop/work area at all times.
  • Washes and details vehicles and equipment as necessary.
  • Assists with coordination or performance of all recycling and surplus efforts as assigned.
  • Performsotherduties asrequested.

EDUCATION

Highschooldiplomaor equivalent required. Job-related vocational or technical training preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Threeyearsautomotivemechanic StateInspectorpreferred. Job-related vocational training or other education may substitute on a year-for-yearbasisfortherequiredexperience.

REQUIREMENTS

Must possess CDL B license and have the ability to attain CDL A permit with Passenger (P) and Air Brake endorsements as issued by the State of Texas within one month and license within the first six months of employment. Must be able to attain State Inspectors license with which to perform vehicle inspections within the first six months of employment. Valid Texas drivers license and a safe driving recordsuchasrequired toattainDrivers Authorizationthroughthe all required DOT pre-employment random reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug andalcohol screens.

Regularandreliableattendance at theUniversityduringregularscheduled daysandworkhoursisan essentialfunction of thisposition.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLSANDABILITIES-Thefollowingareessential:

  • Ability to competently diagnose a wide variety of vehicles and equipment problems using computerized and mechanical devices such as scanners multi-meters compression/pressure gauges and other related tools of the trade.
  • Abilitytosuccessfullyoperateemergencyequipmentandexit passages.
  • Abilitytooperate thecontrols ofthevehicle.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics in order to trace wiring issues.
  • Knowledgeofmodern automotivemechanicalmaintenanceandrepairmethods andpractices.
  • Abilitytoreadandperform writtenandmathematicalfunctions.
  • Skillindiagnosingequipmentmalfunctionsandcorrectingtheproblem.
  • Abilitytoeffectivelydealwiththepublic.
  • Abilitytoeffectivelycommunicateorallybothinperson andbytelephone.
  • Skill in the use of lifts welders grinders presses diagnostic equipment volt meterbattery tester compression unit drills wrenches screwdriver and related tools of thetrade.
  • Abilitytorespond toemergencysituationsinatimely manner.
  • Abilitytouseapersonal computerandotherofficeequipmentincludingrelateduniversitysoftwareand email.

WORKENVIRONMENT

All employees are responsible for maintaining an environment that is free from indoorsand/oroutdoors. The noise level is usually moderate to loud. While performing the duties of thisposition. Work is performed in an auto shop environment. May be required to work in conditionsincluding cold heat temperature swings noise outdoors and indoors and around mechanicalelectricalexplosivefume/odordustandchemicalhazards. Mayberequiredtoworkinlocations that involve hazardous environments requiring protective equipment that conforms toOSHA regulations and some physical discomfort due to temperature dust and noise. May berequiredto workingconfined spaces.

SAFETY

areresponsibleforcompletingassigned taskssafelyandefficientlyandsupervisorsareresponsibleforcreatingandmaintaining a safe work environment. Employees must report any unsafe work conditions orpracticesaswellasanynear-miss and employees should ensure that injury/accident reports are submitted to theOfficeofHumanResources andRisk Managementwithin24hoursoftheincident.
