Job Title: ENG- Y Veterans to Engineers Intern

What Youll Do

The Veterans to Engineers program is designed to work with each participants unique situation and help veterans find part-time of full-time employment. The selected military members could use their transition Permanent Change of Station (PCS) benefits to relocate to the Oak Ridge/Knoxville TN area. Students are expected to use their GI Bill Veterans benefit; however there are a number of sources for veteran support in Tennessee.

Veterans to Engineers participants participate in a rotational program with different groups throughout CNS with the intention of moving into a permanent employment position in Mission Engineering once their degree is complete.

Students usually attend one of the participating colleges/universities for a minimum of one term then verify their academic foundation and adjudicate transfer credits. Participants complete engineering prerequisites (two-year degrees). When the meet the schools criteria they will typically transfer to the University of Tennessee or Tennessee Technological University. Upon graduation they could be offered an engineering position with Consolidate Nuclear Security.

The candidate will participate with technical personnel (in engineering maintenance operations productions R&D activities and other related functions) in analyzing and evaluating technical/engineering problems in developing experimental outlines in scheduling procedural steps and in establishing priorities. Independently conducts test experiments and analyses. Operates and troubleshoots equipment and gathers reduces evaluates and interprets data. Prepares analyses reports and procedures.

Work involves routine and some unique non-routine technical support activities following standard procedures within discipline. Performs routine tests and experiments and assists in the operation of more complex equipment and/or operations. Uses some creativity to generate new ideas. May recommend improvements in methods and procedures.

Compiles with proscribed routines methods and/or practices. Applies some independent judgment with respect to matters of a routine and occasional non-routine nature. Contacts are primarily within the organization but may occasionally work across organizational lines. Usually assists others buy may lead new personnel in routine functions. May review work of other employees. Works cooperatively to accomplish common goals.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a Veteran of any branch of the United States Military
  • Active pursuit of anengineering degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited institution program and discipline.
  • In addition the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e. Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2A)

Preferred Job Requirements

Pursue a Bachelors or Masters degree in an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico the Washington Accord or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET.

  • Must adhere to requirements specified in the Veterans to Engineers program.
  • Must maintain academic in good standing status while employed and must be making satisfactory progress toward Engineering degree requirements.
  • Specialized knowledge and/or experience with nuclear materials processing design and/or systems is highly desired.

If a range of Career Levels is posted i.e. Senior Associate to Senior Specialist internal applicants already in one of the Career Levels would come across at their current Career Level. Internal applicants currently in a lower level Career Level would move to the lowest posted Career Level.
Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712) which requires successful competition of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.

This position may be categorized as a designated position identified by 10 C.F.R. Part 709 requiring successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation that may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
