Unleash your potential and make an impact! The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) is currently accepting applications for an Electronics Technician II.

The primary purpose of the Electronics Technician II (Radio Engineer) position is to provide maintenance of mobile and portable telecommunications equipment and networks throughout the state for NCSHP.The work location is State Highway Patrols Troop D Radio Shop in Greensboro NC (Guilford County).

Job duties/responsibilities include the following:

  • Managing programming maintaining troubleshooting and repairing the following equipment in/on motor vehicles:
    • mobile and portable voice/data transmitting and receiving equipment
    • Mobile Data Computers (MDC)
    • digital processed speed measuring instruments
    • mobile and fixed video surveillance equipment
    • mobile emergency lighting and warning systems
    • mobile antennas
    • special electronics and telecommunications testing equipment and associated electronic electrical and mechanical equipment
  • Analyzing problems troubleshooting and repairing a wide variety of electronic and telecommunication equipment in/on vehicles.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of the following skillsets: installation maintenance and repair of telecommunications equipment modems MDC multiple frequency receivers voice trunking systems a variety of test equipment and antennas.
  • Learning new methods and adapting to continuously changing processes and protocols.
  • Using a wide variety of digital and electronic testing equipment/software.
  • Reading and comprehending technical build manuals.
  • Acquiring and applying knowledge of NCSHP rules regulations policy procedures directives forms reports training manuals and geographical locations.

The typical work schedule is Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM. Please note that this position may also require the occasional special assignment and/or weekend shift.Job duties for this position require driving a state vehicle. About the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP):
The primary mission of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. NCSHP has more than 1600 troopers who cover nearly 80000 miles of North Carolina roadways more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the states traffic laws state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. To qualify for this position applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:
  • Experience with assembly and/or disassembly of vehicles (primarily interiors).
  • Experience working with vehicle electronics (12V systems).
  • Experience using multiple computer software applications laptops (Mobile Data Computers for law enforcement) mobile printers and/or networking applications.
Management Preferences: These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.
  • Experience with the installation maintenance and repair of telecommunications equipment (i.e. modems GPS radio transceivers a variety of test equipment antennas).
  • Proficiency using corded/cordless power tools hand tools and other equipment such as drill presses band saws and grinding/sanding equipment.

Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Currently have (or is able to obtain) a Federal Communications Commission General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) within 6 months of hire date.
PLEASE NOTE: Qualified recommended applicant(s) must undergo and successfully pass a Criminal Background Investigation including a Drug Screening Test. Possession of a valid Drivers License by the date of hire is also required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience. If that language appears below then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience OR a combination of both. See details.

Associates degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressive experience in the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems including some responsibility for the design of electronic apparatus; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Based on the nature of work performed may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
