Job Description

Marching Band Assistant

AuburnHigh School

Montgomery County Public Schools in Virginia has openings and is accepting applications for a Marching Band Assistant atAuburn High School for the 2025-2026 school year.

The marching band assistant is a staff position that supports all aspects of the marching band directors duties and responsibilities. The key responsibility of the assistant will be to work as part of a team to prepare high school instrumental music students for the marching band season. The marching band assistant will engage in activities that develop student abilities in marching so that they are well prepared for pre-game shows half-time shows and community outreach (i.e. parades festivals and special events). The marching band assistant will collaborate with the director to schedule band practices and sectional rehearsals during the summer and support the mastery of reading and performing music while marching in tempo. Those practices or camps may begin as early

as June through August. Travel within the district and surrounding communities is a requirement.

LICENSURE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 3-5 years of experience preferred
  • Experience working with high school aged students in the area of music. Expertise in the area of band and marching band performance
  • Advanced high school marching band college or drum corps experience preferred
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions inquiries and/or complaints
  • Ability and willingness to learn and refresh job skills through professional development in order to meet the changing needs of this position


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

A strong candidate will be able to support and assist the band director to:

  • Organize and lead Summer Marching Band Camp
  • Schedule and conduct rehearsals during the summer months in preparation for the football season competitions parades and other community events
  • Schedule facility use for camp dates rehearsals band activities and performances with the building administration as well as coordinate the dates with other scheduled school activities in cooperation with building administration and custodial staff
  • Communicate with students parents and school administration regarding calendar of events/performances
  • Order and secure all necessary equipment and materials for camp (i.e. drum sticks reeds mouthpieces color guard equipment etc.)
  • Maintain current band uniform inventory; ensure proper uniforms are performance ready (i.e. laundering and dry cleaning)
  • Prepare organize and maintain organization of drill charts and music
  • Instruct students in the proper care and maintenance of musical instruments and uniforms
  • Secure necessary student transportation for off-campus performances parades and competitions
  • Coordinate all paperwork necessary for student travel and participation in all off-campus events (i.e. permission forms attendance medical forms etc.)
  • Enforce all guidelines/rules of conduct for governing students behavior for on and off-campus events
  • Provide and assume responsibility for the supervision of students during rehearsals and performances both on and off campus
  • Read and interpret marching drills and music to instruct students in these areas; provide individualized instruction to students as necessary
  • Coordinate auxiliary ensembles as needed (i.e. drum line color guard)
  • Direct or lead the band independent of the director as needed
  • Encourage and assist students in preparation for performances parades and competitions
  • Be visible in the community and participate in community events
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with staff students and their families; demonstrate a commitment to teamwork
  • Display courtesy tact and respect when dealing with others
  • Maintain confidentiality of student/staff information in the school and in the community
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical social and emotional development of students
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities
  • Organize fundraising activities if applicable
  • Coordinate band booster group activities if applicable
  • Other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. with proper technique.
  • Must work indoors and outdoors.
  • Flexibility in regular schedule including evening/weekend hours is required.
  • Travel within the district and surrounding communities is a requirement.
