Do you love the aina and look to give back by caring for the plants and trees that beautify the island This job is for you if you love working outdoors and have basic experience with propagating cultivating fertilizing pruning and planting trees and plants. Help theDepartment of Parks and Recreation Division of Urban Forestry Horticulture Services install and maintain landscapes along all City properties including areas on planting strips traffic medians and islands park grounds bikeways and gardens. Be prepared to dig holes to plant trees mow spray pesticides and weed to keep City properties looking beautiful. Experience with providing great customer service is not required but highly desirable. Other job duties include but not limited to:

  1. Planting transplanting watering weeding fertilizing spraying (insecticides fungicidesandherbicides) pruning trimmingand/orremoving planting shrubs treesandflowers;
  2. Maintaining surrounding areas in an orderly condition; preparing planting media assisting in plant propagation and collecting seeds;
  3. Pruning and shaping plants for specimen development;
  4. Lawn mowing and trimming operations;
  5. Interacting with the public to resolve inquires and/or complaints and referring difficult problems to supervisors; and
  6. Assistswith propagating desirable plants by seed air layering grafting and cuttings.

Work schedule is from Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. May be required to work after hours or on weekends to apply pesticides herbicides etc. for other special projects and events and for emergency response. Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Special Work Requirements: Handles and uses chemicals and works in areas treated with chemicals. May work solely in remote secluded mountainous areas where there is no drinking water restroom or electricity.

Career Progression
There is room for career growth as you work to progressively advance in the nursery work series from a Nursery Aid up to a Nursery Worker II position. Experienced and knowledgeable nursery workers can later apply to be a Supervising Nursery Worker with satisfactory work experience and demonstration of applicable knowledge and skills.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At the time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Some experience and/or training in the care and cultivation of plants.

Such experience must have demonstrated general horticultural practices and techniques used in the care and cultivation of plants shrubs trees flowers and lawns; use and care of grounds keeping and gardening tools and equipment. And the ability to read understand and apply written instructions and guidelines regarding work schedules and assignments safety practices and departmental directives; pot and re-pot plants and do basic propagation work; learn the names of and identify common plants and trees; use common garden tools and equipment.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:
Possession of an appropriate valid drivers license as required.

The current vacancies may require the following licenses and certificates:
  1. Valid drivers license (Type 3/automobile) prior to appointment.
  2. Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) prior to appointment.
  3. Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test prior to appointment.
  4. First Aid/CPR/AED certificates prior to completion of probation.
  5. Forklift Certification (Class C: Internal Combustion Engine Trucks-Pneumatic Tires) prior to completion of probation.

NOTE: Some of the above certificates are obtained during the pre-employment medical evaluation process. Any required licenses and certificates must be obtained by the time indicated above and maintained throughout the course of employment in the position.
