Position Overview
The Controller will report directly to the Accounting Director and supervise the accounting team. This role is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the accounting department ensuring timely and accurate financial close and reporting. The ideal candidate will be adept at balancing competing demands managing deadlines maintaining attention to detail and working collaboratively within a team environment with honesty and integrity.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of the accounting cycle including accounts receivable (AR) accounts payable (AP) payroll tax forms investments financial close and reporting.
- Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts.
- Review and approve journal entries prepared by accounting staff.
- Oversee weekly payment disbursements and banking activities coordinating approval of all disbursements.
- Manage the month-end closing and financial reporting process including account and margin analysis and account reconciliation.
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly and annual financial statements and reports.
- Maintain the accounting department calendar and monthly close checklists.
- Monitor changes in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulations to ensure the organization remains up-to-date and compliant assisting with any necessary implementation.
- Prepare ad hoc reporting and assist in special projects as needed.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Required: 7 years of accounting experience.
- Required: Expert-level proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- Required: Experience with nonprofit accounting and procedures.
- Preferred: Current CPA license.
- Strongly Preferred: Intacct or similar accounting systems experience.
- Credible ethical honest and able to maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize workload to meet multiple deadlines.
- Strong analytical ability problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including proficiency in English.
- A self-starter capable of working independently with minimum supervision to resolve moderate to complex problems.
- Comfortable with technology and adaptable to change.
- Ability and willingness for onsite work two days a week (Bethesda Maryland).
- Must be able to pass an NIH background check.
