Primary Purpose of Position:

The Historical Interpreter II position serves as the Programs Coordinator for the site and is a critical part of site operations visitor services education and safety. This position supervises volunteers provides educational programming conducts historical research and assists the site manager with budget management and site operations. Work schedule is Tuesday Saturday 8:30am-5pm with some travel and evening work required.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serves as the sites lead interpreter and ensures that excellent visitor services are offered on a day-to-day basis to include greeting guided tours and answering inquiries in person on the phone and digitally.
  • Coordinates special events and other educational programs to include publicity recruiting presenters budgeting and etc.
  • Supervises volunteers and coordinates the sites volunteer program to include recruitment scheduling and training.
  • Assists the site manager with budget management and site operations to include daily deposits purchasing via e-Procurement budget reports and semi-annual inventories.
  • Conducts historical research about the Civil War Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction eras and presents this research via tours exhibits talks publications and programming.
  • Assists with site publicity to include regular updating and posting on social media platforms creation and disseminating of press releases and outreach at community events and other peer entities.
  • Ensures the cleanliness of the sites visitor center and assists maintenance staff as needed for site upkeep and improvement.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be available to work this positions schedule of Tuesday Saturday 8:30am to 5:00pm.
  • Must have a valid drivers license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Must have the ability to spend extended periods of time outside during various weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have the ability to perform strenuous physical work with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted with or without reasonable accommodation.

The Governor Charles B. Aycock Birthplace State Historic Site located between Goldsboro and Fremont in Wayne County is an 18-acre tract of land which encompasses eight historic buildings a visitor center and a maintenance building. The site serves four interpretive functions (1) birthplace and boyhood home of Charles Brantley Aycock fiftieth governor of the State of North Carolina and proponent of public education (2) location of a restored one-room schoolhouse representative of the era before Aycocks term as Governor (3) a surviving example of a mid-nineteenth century farmstead in eastern North Carolina and (4) as a site for the preservation and interpretation of many mid-nineteenth century domestic farming skills and trades.
