CBC News is looking for an experienced digital journalist to join our team at Canadas leading digital news operation and ensure the accurate and timely delivery of news to CBCs digital mobile social and video news platforms. A key requirement of this job is quickly writing breaking news including for our newly launched live pages.
Based in Toronto this part-time permanent position is shifted Saturday and Sunday 5 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. You are the first writer of the day and have excellent news judgment helping to set priorities for the morning team and working with the regions on big breaking news.
Youre an excellent writer with a sharp eye for thoughtful human-centered stories on a range of subjects that reflect and connect with contemporary Canada. You know what works for digital and social audiences and how best to engage them using text images video and audio. You elevate news stories with the best of what CBC has to offer: you are happy to trawl through TV hits and radio segments read interview transcripts and talk to field reporters to identify and include those key moments in your stories.
Youre a critical thinker who is comfortable making independent editorial decisions in accordance with the CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices and the overall digital strategy. You are a self-starter who can work collaboratively and under pressure.
You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives opinions and experiences. You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
Overtime work may be assigned based on operational requirements.
Tasks and responsibilities:
File daily digital stories including researching reporting interviewing writing and fact-checking.
Identify and prepare key news stories for our homepage.
Package digital stories according to mobile-first considerations with an emphasis on increasing audience engagement including relevant videos audio and photo galleries.
Pitch stories that align with growing new audiences according to our mandate.
Jump on breaking news.
Write and curate live story pages.
Curate and program the News app homepage as required.
Edit stories as required.
Work with senior producers to develop story focus and structure.
Work collaboratively with editors to sharpen headlines and text.
Identify and pursue a diverse range of sources.
Relevant qualifications:
Minimum five years recent experience in a digital news environment.
Excellent news judgement.
Substantial experience writing researching fact-checking and packaging digital news content.
Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Open mindset.
Proven ability to work effectively under 24/7 deadline pressures and file same-day stories.
Stellar communication and interpersonal skills.
Aptitude with text and video content management systems.
Experience filing to and running live pages is an asset.
Knowledge of style is an asset.
Experience in Search Engine Optimization and Social Media Optimization.
University degree or equivalent.
