ELA Curriculum Specialist Grades 3-5
Reports to: Assistant Superintendent Curriculum & Instruction
Term of Employment: 10 Months
Qualifications:
- Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction Reading Literacy or related field from an accredited institution (required)
- Valid North Carolina Professional Educators License in Elementary Education or Reading (K12)
- A minimum of three (5) years successful classroom experience in grades 35
- Deep understanding of the Science of Reading and evidence-based literacy practices
- Demonstrated experience aligning curriculum instruction and assessment to state standards
- Experience in planning delivering and evaluating professional development
- Strong coaching facilitation and leadership skills for working with teachers and administrators
- Preferred: Experience in curriculum writing instructional coaching and/or school leadership
Nature of Work:
To improve student achievement in grades 35 ELA by supporting teachers and school leaders in the effective implementation of standards-aligned curriculum and instruction. This role provides district leadership in literacy practices professional learning and instructional coaching to ensure all students meet or exceed grade-level expectations.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:
Instructional Support & Curriculum Implementation
- Ensure alignment of the written taught and assessed curriculum with NC ELA Standards
- Support schools in the selection implementation and refinement of ELA instructional materials
- Collaborate with school administrators and instructional coaches to monitor instructional practices and provide feedback
- Plan model and co-teach lessons to demonstrate research-based reading instruction and intervention strategies
- Assist with the development and review of local common assessments and pacing guides
Professional Development & Coaching
- Design and facilitate ongoing professional development for teachers instructional assistants and school leaders
- Provide job-embedded coaching and support to teachers in grades 35 to improve instructional practices
- Assist in the implementation of the districts Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) related to literacy
- Lead district-level PLCs and teacher leader meetings related to literacy instruction
Data Analysis & Continuous Improvement
- Analyze student achievement and assessment data to identify trends strengths and areas for growth
- Collaborate with district staff to develop improvement plans based on identified needs
- Monitor the impact of curriculum and professional learning initiatives on student outcomes
- Support schools in using data to differentiate instruction and monitor progress
Collaboration & Communication
- Serve as a liaison between schools and the Curriculum and Instruction Department regarding grades 35 ELA
- Provide guidance to principals coaches and teachers to promote consistency and quality in ELA instruction
- Communicate updates from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction related to ELA standards and assessments
- Attend school-based district and regional meetings as needed
- Communicate with parents community members and stakeholders to support student learning.

Required knowledge skills and abilities:
- Strong knowledge of North Carolina English Language Arts Standards and the Science of Reading
- Ability to develop and deliver high-quality professional learning experiences
- Ability to model and support best practices in literacy instruction assessment and intervention
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Capacity to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively across teams
- Technological proficiency in instructional platforms and tools
Physical Requirements:
- This work will require the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.
- Work will regularly require speaking or hearing frequently requires walking and sitting and occasionally requires standing using hands for manual dexterity or to handle or feel stooping kneeling crouching or crawling reaching with hands and arms and lifting.
- Work will require preparing and analyzing written or computer data; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office light traffic).
Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction in accordance with Lee County Schools Board policy and the North Carolina Educator Evaluation System.
