Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

DJJ is currently hiring a Mentoring Program Coordinator. This position will oversee and manage a mentoring program for juvenile offenders committed to DJJ to enhance re-entry to the community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess effective presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of current mentoring practices for youthful offenders.
  • Knowledge of Virginias Juvenile Justice System.
  • Skilled in effective oral and written communication and listening.
  • Skilled in organization and leadership.
  • Skilled in using basic computer software programs and databases packages as organizational tools preparing reports and data entry.
  • Ability to develop and provide training to mentors.
  • Ability to communicate with other agencies and organizations to create partnerships.
  • Ability to coordinate and provide technical assistance.
  • Ability to identify personality traits attitudes and behaviors knowledge and technical skills essential for the success of mentor/mentee matches.
  • Working knowledge of youth mentoring programs.

Additional Considerations

  • Completion of a mentoring training certification program.
  • Experience in youth based mentoring programs.
  • Experience working with youth in a juvenile justice alternative school or school setting.
