Salary: $23.00 - $27.00 Commensurate with Experience

SUMMARY

Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is seeking a Planning apprentice to join a dynamic team of planners and analysts to reimagine and improve the quality of transit service for the Charlotte region. CATS is moving forward with numerous strategic initiatives to improve the reliability and quality of bus and rail services. This position will assist CATS in implementing short range service plans and other key initiatives to help improve the customer experience and enhance mobility options for residents within the Charlotte area.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular field work to determine accuracy of bus stop placement amenities and signage
  • Assess current shelters and amenities to determine amenity type size asset number condition and other relevant information to better support tracking needs
  • Perform an inventory of current park and rides
  • Assist CATS staff with public engagement campaigns
  • Assist staff with data collection and input
  • Review public facing information for accuracy
  • Respond to and track customer service requests as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
  • As part of your responsibility to support the CATS Safety Culture report safety concerns and issues through the various methods established by CATS as outlined in the ASP.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Attention to detail and ability to think critically and independently strongly desired.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software
  • Basic knowledge in ArcGIS 10.x
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative approach to work products
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (oral and written).
  • Ability to learn CATS processes and ask appropriate questions.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to participate and work well in a team environment

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four-year degree with a BA/BS in geography engineering urban planning or related field or an equivalent combination of background experience and skills necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Valid drivers license

Preferred Qualifications:

Transportation planning experience and knowledge of transit planning best practices preferred.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The Citys Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes but is not limited to: reference checks social security verification education verification criminal conviction record check and if applicable a credit history check sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidates written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process candidates may be asked to take a skills test and/or participate in other assessments.
