Dorchester County Public Schools is accepting applications for a Supervisor of Special Education who assumes overall responsibility of the Special Education Program including classroom instruction teacher performance and the provision of a free and appropriate public education for students with special needs. The successful candidate will demonstrate principled leadership and decision making while assuming a leadership role that advances the district towards its stated vision and mission.
DUTIES:
- Ensures adherence to federal and state regulations regarding the provision of services to students with disabilities.
- Develops procedures and criteria for special education programs.
- Monitors student eligibility for special education programs.
- Coordinates and monitors procedures for referral evaluation placement and monitoring of students regarding special education programs and services.
- Recommends policies and programs to meet the needs of exceptional children.
- Keeps informed of all legal requirements governing special education.
- Evaluates the special education program curriculum procedures and individual students needs and achievements leading program revisions as needed.
- Assists in recruiting screening and recommendations for hiring of special education staff.
- Coordinates services and programs with outside agencies as appropriate and necessary.
- Interprets the objectives and programs of the special education services to the Board the administration staff and the public as large.
- Develop and manage departmental budget including those with outside funding sources.
- Plans and conduct in-service components and other professional development activities.
- Supervise subordinate staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possesses prior to appointment the Maryland State Department of Education Licensure endorsement of Supervisor of Special Education.
- A masters degree in the appropriate field.
- Five (5) years of successful teaching experience required.
- Three (3) years of successful experience as a school-based administrator preferred.
- Experience with Special Education.
- Ability to develop effective work teams.
- Familiarity with the outcome and indicators of the Maryland Instructional Leadership Framework.
- Expertise with the Maryland State Curriculum and/or Core Learning Goals in the areas supervised.
- Proficient in the use of the Maryland Professional Development Standards.
