FUNCTION OF WORK:
To perform responsible non-professional nursing support work which involves assisting in creating and maintaining a therapeutic environment for patients.

Close from a Psychiatric Aide Supervisor or other professional medical personnel.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from the Psychiatric Aide 2 by the limitation of responsibility in the performance of duties.

Performs all tasks in a training capacity.
Assists to create and maintain a therapeutic environment for mentally ill and/or substance abuse patients to include performing routine nursing duties such as taking vital signs and weighing patients.
Records data on patients charts concerning behavioral observations vital signs symptoms accidents injuries etc.
Cares for the personal needs of patients and assists them in good grooming personal hygiene eating and the control of money and valuables.
Accompanies patients to clinics meals recreational activities field trips etc. to insure safety and prevent elopements.
Cleans sanitizes and maintains safe surroundings.
Performs required duties in maintaining a safe and sanitary environment for patients by assisting in cleaning physical surroundings furnishings and equipment in patient care area.
Performs housekeeping duties such as changing bed linens making beds and assisting with washing patients clothes.
Assists in restraining hostile and physically violent patients utilizing therapeutic intervention techniques.
Makes rounds to check patients presence; checks for compliance with safety rules and regulations and documents appropriately.
Interacts with patients as a therapeutic function; observes and reports condition of patients to appropriate professional personnel.
Observes collects and labels urines for drug screen and/or analysis.
Administers breathalyzer.
Participates with groups in therapeutic activities.
Assists in emergency situations.
Supervises the work of patients engaged in work activities.Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
45% Gives and receives reports on clients at change of shift accepts client care assignments for assigned shift. Maintains a therapeutic environment correctly identifies clients growth and development stages and communicates according to level of understanding stage of growth and development. Ensures clients safety and observation assigned to clients during escort; provides accountability of assigned client at all times; documents patient location; assist patient with activities of daily living personal clothing care daily household chores and feeding and ensures all eating utensils are accounted for and assists clients and other staff with maintaining a clean environment. Assists licensed staff with organizing medication administration. Observation of clients for compliance and notifies LPN when non-compliance is suspected.
40% Participates in Treatment Team meetings provides nursing input and notifies appropriate personnel when clients condition or behavior changes. Performs routine nursing duties according to level of competency and within licensure guidelines and documents findings or clients response accurately and timely. Assist with admission transfer discharge elopement and pass procedures and initiates or responds to codes according to level of competency type code procedures.
10% Maintains open communication with supervisors reports accidents injuries according to policy and procedure and participates willingly in investigations provides incident reports when appropriate.
5% Participate in education trainings that are mandatory for accreditation and licensure of the facility. Perform all other duties assigned by supervisor/designee to maintain continuity and quality accreditation and licensure requirements. Perform all other duties assigned by supervisor but not listed for the smooth operation of the unit/building and/or the facility. Maintains current and unencumbered motor vehicle license. Adheres to all rules regulations policies and procedures of LDH OBH Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System and Civil Service.
Position-Specific Details:
This vacancy is located in the Secure Forensic Facility (SFF)of Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson LA (East Feliciana Parish).ELMHS is the largest 24-hour multi-site state psychiatric complex comprised of residential outpatient and inpatient services. This position will be filled for nights.

This position may be filled as either a Probational or Job Appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a Promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency wide permanent status employees) by Detail to Special Duty. Current permanent status classified employees may be required to accept a Probational appointed if selected for a full-time position.
Psychiatric Aide 1 Special Entrance Rate:$972.00/Biweekly or $12.15/Hour
Work Incentive Pay is $1.50/hr. for hours worked
Facility Longevity Pay is $1.00/hr. for hours worked
