Job Description:

The Counseling and Wellness Center (CWC) is part of the Division of Student assistant director for training reports to the associate director for training. The assistant director and the associate director for training are responsible for coordinating and providing oversight for the training program and operations. The individual in this position will assist with developing and maintaining policies and procedures to ensure adherence to the highest clinical standards applicable state and federal statutes local health and safety laws and regulations student life risk management policies and professional codes of ethics.

This individual works with the associate director of training to oversee training concerns supervision licensure continuing education teaching and onboarding of new hires. The assistant director for training holds responsibility for the practicum advanced practicum and postdoctoral training programs operated by the CWC including responsibility for the recruitment selection training and evaluation of masters interns doctoral practicum advanced practicum students and postdoctoral fellows. The individual in this position also provides direct clinical supervision and training to masters interns practicum and advanced practicum doctoral students and unlicensed staff as needed. They are responsible for maintaining program records as required by accrediting bodies and professional standards.

The assistant director for training works closely with the clinical crisis outreach digital/technology and fiscal areas of the center to ensure quality assurance and training for all trainees. They are also responsible for maintaining ongoing relationships with the Counseling Psychology and Counselor Education programs to ensure excellence in training with regard to their past current and future students. The assistant director for training works with the training program assistant regarding training support activities. The individual in this position is expected to participate in national/regional professional organizations and activities pertaining to their role.

In addition to the administrative duties described above this position will carry a modest clinical case load which may include the following: individual couples and group counseling clinical consultation outreach programming and clinical supervision. This position may also include teaching research and other scholarly activities/responsibilities. In the absence of the associate director for training the assistant director for training will supervise all training operations in accordance with Counseling and Wellness Center policies and procedures. This may include running training meetings and attending leadership team meetings. This assistant director for training may be deemed an essential employee which may require reporting to work during an emergency.

The mission of the Counseling and Wellness Center at the University of Florida is to support students in fostering their mental health and well-being to promote personal educational and career development. We achieve this through the delivery of high-quality socially conscious services. Our primary focus is providing brief confidential counseling to help students succeed both academically and in their interpersonal relationships.

The faculty and staff of the Counseling and Wellness Center provide trauma-informed support services. We help students navigate periods of intense mental distress offering support for complex trauma and other adversities they may face. Our goal is to minimize the use of non-consensual interventions employing them only after procedural due process and when all other available resources have been exhausted.   • Individual couples and group counseling for students with psychological emotional academic and/or relationship concerns
  • Crisis intervention for students experiencing a personal crisis or emergency
  • Stress management and biofeedback services
  • Outreach prevention and educational programs for students faculty and staff
  • Consultation services for students faculty staff families and friends of students
  • Training and supervision to counseling and psychology graduate students from pre-practicum through post-doctoral training
  • Assessment and referral services
  • Teaching research and scholarship

Our staff consists of 57 clinicians in clinical psychology counseling psychology and counselor education.

Expected Salary:

Salary negotiable based on qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum qualifications for the position include a doctoral degree in a counseling or clinical psychology (APA accredited) or counseling (CACREP accredited) program and licensed as a mental health professional or psychologist in the State of Florida.

Preferred Qualifications:

The successful candidate will bring many of the following professional qualifications skills experience and personal qualities

  • Minimum of three years professional experience in a mental health setting with at least one year in a student counseling or student mental health setting.
  • Administrative/Leadership experience. Ability to work in and with large complex systems
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct brief psychotherapy and crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and ethics pertaining to all mental health fields in Florida.
  • Demonstrated skills in providing outreach and prevention services.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise trainees
  • Knowledge of developmental issues in University populations.
  • Knowledge of intermediate computer skills e.g. Microsoft Suite and virtual meeting platforms. Ability to work with and learn various software programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills critical thinking and organizational skills required to develop and maintain policies and procedures for the CWC in the area of training.
  • Demonstrated skill in working well under pressure to prioritize and manage multiple clinical consultation and/or outreach situations and to coordinate these efforts as a part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Energy to flexibly manage the professional demands within a counseling center with high utilization rates while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships.
  • Demonstrated skills to conduct crisis management; short-term individual group and couples counseling/psychotherapy; care plan formulation and recommendations
  • Self-motivated self-directed commitment to high professional ideals standards and ethics
