POSITION SUMMARY:
Supports the work of the Y a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development healthy living and social responsibility. The Head Cook provides supervision of the Assistant Cook and Nutrition Assistants and oversees direct service in the central kitchen. Oversight includes preparation and production of the daily food program operations in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards rules and regulations determined by the California Department of Social Services the Child and Adult Care Food Program and Community Care Licensing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Perform effective supervision of Assistant Cook and Nutrition Assistants.
2. Plan and prepare meals based on the daily menu using standardized recipes according to CACFP guidelines documenting any substitutions appropriately.
3. Prepare meals for transport to sites ensuring that proper temperature safety and sanitation procedures are followed.
4. Maintain all records as determined by the California Department of Social Services and the CACFP including but not limited to meal accommodations based on medical needs as required. Maintain a clear and concise tracking method.
5. Order food and non-food supplies as needed to implement menu as written.
6. Maintain inventory at Central Kitchen using FIFO method and completing all necessary logs.
7. Receive vendor orders following proper receiving procedures ensuring that all items have been delivered.
8. Maintain the Central Kitchen and foodservice equipment in a sanitary and operational manner.
9. Ensure accurate documentation of refrigerator and freezer temperature logs twice daily.
10. Clean and maintain refrigerator and kitchen areas utilizing recycling as appropriate.
11. Attend staff meetings and required professional development opportunities.
12. Communicate efficiently and in a timely manager with supervisors if/when issues arise.
13. Provide menu and program feedback as needed to ensure optimal programming.
14. Create warm and welcoming relationships with children and families and other staff.
15. Perform other duties as assigned.
16. This position requires you to drive to the grocery store shop for groceries and return to the site.

QUALIFICATIONS (ALSO CALLED ENTRY REQUIREMENTS OR KNOW HOW):
High School Diploma or equivalent
Five years cooking experience; high volume preferred
Three years of supervisory experience
Two years of Early Childhood experience preferred
Experience working with children and families of diverse cultural backgrounds
Ability to work effectively in a high stress environment
Valid California Drivers License
Physical examination and TB clearance
Proof of immunization for Measles and Pertussis Flu vaccination recommended but not required
LiveScan fingerprint and criminal record clearance.
Current certificates for Pediatric First Aid and CPR including a total of 15 hours of preventative health and safety training or completion of this training within 90 days of hire
Must be able to communicate in English with proficiency bilingual or multilingual preferred
Good verbal and written communication skills
