Job Description
The Web Developer plays a key role in developing and maintaining the Salk Institutes websites and web-based applications. Working collaboratively with the Manager Digital Communications graphic designers vendors and internal stakeholders this individual ensures the delivery of high-quality responsive and accessible digital experiences.
Primary responsibilities include engineering websites using HTML CSS JavaScript and PHP; maintaining custom database-driven applications (PHP/MySQL); customizing WordPress themes and plugins; and developing digital tools and registration systems to support laboratories events and core facilities.
This role requires strong technical skills a keen eye for design and usability and the ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail. The Web Developer also supports IT with security updates and server/database-related needs and plays a key role in ensuring Salks digital properties adhere to accessibility and branding standards.
The individual must be creative and have outstanding attention to detail and be a forward-looking strategic self-starter with sound judgment and the ability to meet competing demands and priorities of stakeholder groups often under tight deadlines.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Web Development and Support
- Serves as a primary point of contact for the Institutes websites and web applications.
- Builds tests and maintains responsive cross-browser compatible websites and web apps.
- Updates and manages content using WordPress and custom PHP/MySQL applications.
- Creates specialty tools such as email signature generators lab asset databases and event registration systems.
- Ensures ADA compliance and accessibility across web properties.
- Supports internal communications by managing multimedia content (videos photos text).
- Collaborates within External Relations/Communications to align web content with Salk branding.
Conducts usability testing and implements analytics to assess website effectiveness. - Troubleshoots and resolves web-related issues including functionality server-side issues and content accuracy.
- Develops web forms interactive features and backend systems to streamline processes.
- Monitors and implements web security measures and system updates.
Planning Strategy and Innovation
- Evaluates new web technologies for integration into Salks digital infrastructure.
- Contributes to the strategic planning of web and application development.
- Recommends performance and design enhancements for existing systems.
- Maintains documentation of best practices and ensures software license compliance.
Collaboration and Communication
- Consults with faculty and staff to assess web development needs and define project scopes.
- Translates client requirements into functional and aesthetic web solutions.
- Communicates timelines development processes and technical constraints effectively.
What we Require
- 3 years experience in web development preferably in communications marketing or similar environment
- Bachelors degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience with formal training or certification in web development and/or design
- Proficiency in HTML CSS JavaScript and PHP
- Experience with WordPress and custom PHP/MySQL content management systems
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Prior work experience in a larger (500) organization is preferred
- Strong understanding of HTML5 CSS3 JavaScript PHP REST APIs
- Working knowledge of Photoshop and multimedia integration
- Familiarity with web accessibility guidelines and usability best practices
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues independently
- Excellent communication skillswritten verbal and interpersonal
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure with precision
- Strong collaborative skills and a customer-focused mindset
- Experience gathering user requirements and translating them into development solutions
- High degree of integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Working knowledge of cloud-based servers with test environments is preferred
- Experience with ticketing booking and event management software customizations is preferred
What We Can Offer
The expected pay range for this position is $43.00 to $50.00 an hour.Salk Institute provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the institute reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position the qualifications of the selected candidate departmental budget availability internal equity geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
