Financial Aid Advisor III - Team Supervisor

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree and 5 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience managing or providing direct oversight to staff.
Experience supervising training or mentoring other staff in a financial aid or student services setting.
Experience designing delivering or administering financial wellness initiatives student loan counseling or default prevention strategies.
Familiarity with administering aid for students participating in study abroad or National Student Exchange (NSE) programs.
Experience using financial aid software such as Workday DocFinity Banner ELM or iLink.
Experience presenting to groups of people.

Job Description:

Are you passionate about helping students achieve their academic goals while promoting financial wellness As a Financial Aid Advisor III at Iowa State University you will play a key leadership role in guiding students and families through the financial aid process. This position offers the opportunity to support students one-on-one lead financial literacy initiatives and supervise key programs within the Office of Student Financial Aid. Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise students and families on financial aid processes options and eligibility for federal state institutional and private aid.
  • Lead financial literacy initiatives including one-on-one advising sessions and group presentations that empower students to make informed financial decisions.
  • Supervise and support a team of Financial Aid Advisors providing guidance and ensuring quality service delivery.
  • Oversee the administration of private loan processing and serve as a primary contact for external lenders and loan platforms (e.g. ELM iLink).
  • Manage financial aid processes related to study abroad and the National Student Exchange (NSE) program.
  • Support outreach by participating in university resource fairs high school events and prospective student programming.
  • Administer the universitys default management and financial literacy programming through the Office of Student Financial Success.
  • Review and process professional judgment appeals including special condition reviews dependency overrides and satisfactory academic progress appeals.

Example of Duties

Assists students and families by making recommendations interpreting regulations and reviewing petitions.

Counsels students and families regarding financial aid including eligibility application procedures aid programs costs indebtedness money management and financial planning.

Provides status updates regarding eligibility scholarships and applications.

Provides specialized support for a financial aid area.

Analyzes data compiles reports and applies judgement.

Evaluates individual circumstances and documentation and makes adjustments or exceptions based on judgment.

Prepares and gives presentations related to financial aid and related topics.

May supervise employees.



Level Guidelines
Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISUs mission and department or work unit goals
Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
Responds to complicated inquiries provides training and provides direction to lower-level staff
May provide supervision to one to two other staff (i.e. leads a small work team)
May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
Provides guidance to students
