Job Description

PERSON SPECIFICATION
NOTES TO JOB APPLICANTS
  1. You must clearly demonstrate on your application form under each question how and to what extent you meet the required criteria as failure to do so may result in you not being shortlisted. You should clearly demonstrate this for both the essential and desirable criteria where relevant.
  2. You must demonstrate how you meet the criteria by the closing date for applications unless the criteria state otherwise.
  3. The stage in the process when the criteria will be measured is outlined in the table below.
  4. Shortlisting will be carried out on the basis of the essential criteria set out in Section 1 below using the information provided by you on your application form.
  5. Please note that the Selection Panel reserves the right toshortlist only those applicants that it believes most strongly meet thecriteria for the role.
  6. In the event of an excessive number of applications the Selection Panel also reserves the right to apply any desirable criteria asoutlined in Section 3 at shortlisting in which case these will be applied in the order listed. It is important therefore that you also clearly demonstrate on your application form how you meet any desirable criteria.
SECTION 1 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland by the date of taking up duty.

Experience

Demonstrable experience and/or professional development in the teaching of a broad and balanced curriculum for pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties significant complex communication andanxiety challenges and ASD.

Demonstrable experience of using arange of effective classroom approaches to provide support and challenge for children and young people with ASD including a range of appropriate classroom management strategies the use of digital media/tools mobile technology andmulti-sensory strategiesto enhance learning.

Demonstrable experience of developing positive relationships for learning with a range of stakeholders including leading motivatingand supporting a team.

Demonstrable experience of and/or professional development in the use of specialist equipment facilities or skills to meet the needs of children and young people with Severe Learning difficulties and ASD that support inclusive practice.

Knowledge of developing teaching and learning across thecurriculum with an emphasis on multi-sensory learningareas for young people severe learning difficulties and ASD.

Knowledge and understanding of current assessment methods used with children and young people who have Special Educational Needs to diagnose barriers to learning plan for learning set appropriate targets for learning and measure progress.

Knowledge and/or experienceof developing a broad and balanced curriculum for children and or young people with severe learning difficulties and ASD including:

  • the core learning areas of Communication Using Mathematics and Using ICT
  • the use of thematic teaching approaches and topic development
  • the use of multi-sensory approaches to support enhanced learning outcomes for pupils including pupils with challenging behaviour
  • the implementationof Shared and inclusive learning experiences/opportunities

Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice and its implications

Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and its implications.

3 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA

1. Have studied and/or experience in teaching and/or the whole school coordination in one or more of the following learning areas and/or teaching strategies (Each criterion will be applied separately depending on level of interest in the posts):

  • Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities
  • World around us
  • Music
  • Physical Education and/or
  • Drama

2. Have Training in teaching including SEND within

  • Primary Education
  • Nursery Education

3. Have training in and experience teaching a child with severe learning difficulties through one or more of the following areas

  • Implementation of a communication system such as PECS and/or Makaton
  • Writing and implementing a PLP
  • Structured teaching functional learning and life skills
  • Delivering the NI curriculum up Level 2 including the use of Quest and Pre-requisites of Learning.
  • Delivering learning in an inclusive school setting thats learning with peers.

4. Applicants must clearly state relevant experience including dates and school names. Shortlisting will consider recent teaching practice or paid teaching experience within the last 6 years in the following order

  • Student Teaching Experience in Special Provision
  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 12 months
