Job Description

THE CITY OF JACKSON IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE FOLLOWING FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS SENIOR MECHANIC Internal & External Posting

General Summary: Under the supervision of a higher classified employee works as a mechanic repairing and maintaining a wide range of diesel and gasoline powered equipment mechanical and hydraulic equipment. Installs special equipment on City vehicles.


Typical Duties:
1. Has charge of and is responsible for the effective operation of the Department repair shop.
2. Diagnoses and makes major and minor repairs to all motorized equipment including diesel and gasoline powered and related equipment.
3. Performs preventive maintenance in accordance with applicable industry standards and assists in developing preventive maintenance policies.
4. Repairs mechanical equipment in City-owned buildings.
5. Maintains a shop inventory of all tools equipment parts and supplies used in the performance of his/her duties.
6. Conducts performance tests and inspections of new and newly repaired vehicles and equipment. Submits reports and maintains detailed records of all tests repairs inventory and inspections.
7. Makes recommendations regarding equipment design specifications construction and purchase. Assists with development of bid specifications and analysis of manufacturers bid proposals.
8. Performs body and fender repair work on equipment and motor vehicles.
9. Uses electrical and gas welding equipment as required to make repairs.
10. Instructs drivers in the operation proper care and maintenance of motor vehicles and equipment. Assists in developing standard operating procedures and maintenance guidelines for use of vehicles and equipment.
11. Operates computer terminal for data input. Creates and maintains computerized records and reports. Designs and upgrades filing systems and checklists for new equipment.
12. Communicates with equipment companies and orders parts for repairs. Arranges for any warranty needs for new equipment. As necessary performs warranty repairs and provides information to bill manufacturer.
13. Must be available for emergency operations which may include response to major fire incidents and natural disasters. Must also be available for snow plowing activities. May be required to work with night shift.
14. Performs related work as required by a higher classified employee.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand walk use hands and fingers talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms such as to operate vibrating machinery. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and may climb ladders. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 pounds of such as parts. The employee will be required to push/pull objects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.


While performing the duties of this job the employee regularly works outdoors and will occasionally work indoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud. The employee is required to work with and around chemical products such as petroleum products solvents and cleaning materials.


Eligibility Requirements: Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. Must have valid State of Michigan CDL license (with A and N endorsements) within 90 days of date of hire and have a good driving record on the date of hire. Must maintain CDL license and good driving record while employed in this position. Must have and provide proof of a current State of Michigan Master Mechanics certification and/or an ASE Master Mechanics certification in automotive repair. Must have and provide proof of a current State of Michigan Master Mechanics certification and/or an ASE Master Mechanics certification in heavy truck repair within one year of the date of hire. All mechanic certifications must be maintained while employed in this position. Must have a minimum of five (5) years experience in all of the following: gasoline and diesel engine repair including heavy equipment; working with on-board computers (ECM ABS body control modules and SIR); transmission repair; electrical repair brake repair steering and suspension repair. Must have thorough knowledge of hydraulic systems welding and fabricating. Knowledge of emergency vehicle repair and small equipment repair is desirable.


In addition to the above requirements all City positions require: the ability to read write speak and understand the English language as necessary for the position; the ability to follow written and oral instructions; and the ability to get along with other employees and members of the public. City employees are expected to possess and maintain a record of orderly law-abiding citizenship sobriety integrity and loyalty as it pertains to and reflects upon their employment with the City; and must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of their position without excessive absences.
