Required Education: Bachelors Degree AND:
- 24 months of relevant fire experience in fire safety programs code enforcement plan review or closely related
Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of Bachelors Degree for a total of 72 months of related experience.
Skills:
Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
Read and understand complex written materials such as blueprints metrics or technical manuals
Knowledge of principles methods and techniques of fire prevention and life safety codes inspection principles practices and methods
Advanced knowledge of building codes and inspection methods
Knowledge of seismic and storm caused structural damage assessment
Must possess a working understanding of fire behavior International Building and Fire Codes and National Fire Protection Association and other relevant standards
Ability to compare installed systems to intended design and understand blueprints and drawings
Ability to communicate directions and expectations effectively
Certifications:

- Ability to climb ladders and stairs.
- Frequent and repeated bending stopping and kneeling.
- Ability to crawl under structures and through tunnels.
- Ability to work with arms extended above head and work while lying down.
- Ability to carry tools up to and/or in excess of 50 lbs up or down stairs.
- Occasional exposure to heavy lifting (minimum of seventy-five pounds).
- Using visual color discrimination and acuity to read diagrams schematics and gauges diagnose problems distinguish correct electrical wires and ensure safety.
- Ability to use assorted mechanical tools.
- Environmental: Ability to work in stressful conditions.
- Occasional exposure to extremely disagreeable or extreme weather conditions and safety hazards.
- Working with hazardous materials.
- Ability to work on rooftops that exceed ten feet.
Department Preferences:
- Certifications in fire inspection fire investigation and plan review. NIMS certification& 400.
- 5-years experience working in public safety
- Previous experience in working with contractors and sub-contractors on construction projects
- Experience in issuing permits and enforcing codes and standards in the field.

Inspects all types of University occupancies for fire hazards code violations and for the proper maintenance operation and installation of fire protection devices appropriate exit signs emergency lighting and evacuation plans/routes. Investigates fires to determine cause and origin. Develops and presents training to the University community in the form of fire prevention lectures videos and demonstrations to encourage and promote fire safety.
Essential Duties include but are not limited to:
- Inspects all types of university structures and occupancies for non-compliance of fire safety regulations and for conditions contributing to fire hazards.
- Assists departments with fire evacuation drills for all University buildings to ensure safety for the University community. Provides safety tips and gives recommendations to the University community regarding seasonal fire safety.
- Implements and conducts fire safety education programs for the University community. Provides education and training to faculty staff and students in the area of fire safety fire prevention hazardous materials and emergency procedures. Maintains educational materials such as presentations brochures guidelines and plans.
- Provides professional leadership and coordination to the University community to correct non-compliance issues. Follows up on the implementation of corrective actions and assists with compliance by identifying alternative solutions.
- Advises and provides support and consultation for long-term outages of fire protection systems and fire watch requirements.
- Develops and maintains emergency preparedness materials and procedures for building emergencies. Assists departments in developing building or department specific plan.
- Reports serious and imminent health and safety deficiencies to management communicates necessary action to the responsible party and tracks progress until resolved.
- Performs fire investigations to include interviewing individuals at the scene documents incidents and helps educate those involved. Maintains statistics on cause and contributing factors.
- Inspects and maintains fire extinguishers throughout all University buildings. Develops or reviews fire exit plans.
- Responds to and assists in rescue/control activities in natural disasters such as floods tornadoes or earthquakes.
- May schedule and/or perform fire sprinkler fire pump and fire alarm acceptance tests with University staff and outside contractors. Maintains activity reports.
- Acts on the behalf and performs the duties of the Fire Marshal when not available.
- Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
