Description

Title:Director of Counseling Services

Bargaining Unit/Salary Level:Salary and benefits commensurate with the Agreement between the MCCS Trustees and the MEA Administrators Unit. Salary for this position is pending classification. Salary range likely to be in the low $60000s.

Responsibilities:

The Director of Counseling Services provides short-term individual and group counseling to students experiencing personal emotional or developmental challenges including conducting crisis interventions and safety assessments as needed. This position plays a vital role in promoting student success through timely ethical and inclusive mental health services. The director serves as a liaison to community mental health and substance use providers referring students with longer-term or specialized needs that extend beyond the colleges available services. In addition to direct clinical support this role leads mental health and substance use education and awareness initiatives for students faculty and staff through training sessions orientation programs and campus-wide campaigns. The director also creates and oversees community-building groups and activities designed to foster peer connection and support. This position serves as a back-up to the Accessibility Coordinator assisting students with disabilities and coordinating accommodations when needed. The director participates on the colleges Coordination Assessment Response and Education (CARE) team which identifies and supports college community members who may be experiencing distress or navigating challenges that prompt concern.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in counseling social work or a related field.
  • Current State of Maine LCSW or LCPC licensure or the ability to obtain licensure to practice in the state of Maine.
  • Two or more years of related experience.
  • Experience in both individual and group counseling approaches and skilled at engaging with students faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Expertise in crisis response trauma-informed care and substance use prevention.
  • Solid understanding of strategies to assess and support students mental health substance use and academic needs as they navigate personal and developmental challenges.
  • Experience in designing and facilitating psychoeducational programs on topics such as substance use prevention mental health awareness and stigma reduction and stress management.

Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.
  • Experience offering therapy within a college or university setting.
  • Knowledge of the legal frameworks and best practices for supporting individuals with disabilities. This includes familiarity with disability types relevant laws and regulations (such as the ADA and Section 504) and knowledge of assistive technology.
