Position Information
This is a Department Promotional Examinationand is open only to current eligible employees of theKern County Public Works Departmentwho have successfully completed their initial probationary period and received an overall rating of standard or better on the last employee performance report.
Examinations:- Oral exam date will be announced five (5) days prior to the examination.
Examinations:
Oral Exam (Weight 100%):Will be conducted for the purpose of appraising the applicants training education experience interest and personal fitness for the position.
The Human Resources Division may solely conduct an appraisal of application materials should there be an insufficient number of candidates to warrant an oral exam.Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.Examination components for promotional testing will be administered during scheduled date(s)/time(s)/location without exception.
Minimum Qualifications / Employment StandardsHigh School Diploma G.E.D. or equivalentAND two years of journey level building inspection experience;
OR
an equivalent combination of educationAND experience sufficient to obtain the knowledge and skill to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possession and maintenance of a valid certification in at least one area of specialty dependent upon assignment (Residential Inspector disciplines are not acceptable.):
International Code Council (ICC) Certification:- Commercial Building Inspector
- Commercial Electrical Inspector
- Commercial Mechanical Inspector
- Commercial Plumbing Inspector
Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) Class A Certification
International Code Council (ICC) Legacy Certifications (Building Electrical Mechanical or Plumbing)
California Department of General Services Division of the State Architect:- Certified Access Specialist (CASp)

Additional Information
Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.
A background check may be conducted for this classification.
Following an offer of employment you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.
This examination will establish an eligible list from which an immediate appointment will be made at the Public Works Department.
Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
