Board Vice Chair

Organization: Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine (SARSSM)
Location: York & Cumberland Counties Southern Maine
Commitment: Volunteer Unpaid 25 hours/month


MISSION STATEMENT

Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine provides free services in York and Cumberland counties to anyone affected by sexual assault sexual harassment or sexual abuse through prevention programs support education and advocacy.


About SARSSM
SARSSM has provided free confidential support to individuals impacted by sexual violence harassment and abuse since 1973. Our work centers around Intervention Prevention and Engagement empowering survivors and educating communities.

Key programs include:

  • 24/7 Confidential Support Helpline
  • Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)
  • School & Community-Based Prevention Programs
  • Support Groups
    Childrens Advocacy Services including the Childrens Advocacy Center of York County


The Role of the Board
SARSSM Board members are essential to our mission. They provide leadership ensure strong governance and help secure the resources needed to sustain our services. This is not a traditional volunteer roleits a position of accountability advocacy and strategic impact.


Vice Chair of the Board SARSSM


Role Summary: The Vice Chair plays a vital leadership role on the Board of Directors supporting the Board Chair and serving as a key strategic partner to the Executive Director. This position ensures continuity of governance and leadership in the Chairs absence and helps guide the organization in fulfilling its mission. The Vice Chair also plays a central role in board development labor relations and organizational oversight.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Governance & Leadership:
    • Preside over board meetings in the absence of the Chair.
    • Assist in maintaining board focus on mission goals and accountability.

  • Board Development:
    • Lead board member recruitment onboarding and professional development..
    • With the Board Secretary track director terms and ensure timely reappointment or replacement.
    • Promote board engagement and succession planning.

  • Labor Relations:
    • Serve as the Labor Liaison between the Board and the bargaining unit at contract negotiations.
    • Facilitate clear and productive communication regarding labor matters in collaboration with the Executive Director.

  • Fiduciary Responsibilities (all Board members):
    • Fulfill the boards legal and ethical responsibilities including duties of care loyalty and obedience.
    • Actively participate in budget review financial oversight and policy compliance.
    • Ensure the organization operates in alignment with its bylaws policies and applicable laws.

  • Other Duties:
    • Take on additional responsibilities as delegated by the Board Chair or full board.

Qualifications:

  • Proven leadership experience and ability to facilitate strategic conversations.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to lead impartially and foster consensus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and serve as a trusted partner to executive leadership.
  • Minimum of two years of nonprofit board service; prior experience as Chair/President preferred.
  • Understanding of nonprofit governance fiduciary duties and the organizations mission.
  • Willingness to assume leadership responsibilities and step into the Chair role if needed.
  • Commitment to devoting sufficient time and energy to the role.
