SALARY: $60648.00 to $114735.00 current provincial recruitment and retention allowance ASSIGNMENT: 1.0 (FTE) Continuing Specialist Position

  • CARRIER LANGUAGE AND CULTURE TEACHER and Indigenous Student Success (ISS Teacher)
SPECIFIC ASSIGNMENT TO BE DETERMINED BY THE DISTRICT PRINCIPAL OF INDIGENOUS EDUCATION AND SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

The School District

Nechako Lakes is situated on the traditional unceded territories of fourteen First Nations encompassing the Dakelh Neduten and Wetsuweten peoples. The school district encompasses five municipalities the Districts of Fort St James and Vanderhoof and the Villages of Fraser Lake Burns Lake and Granisle. This large area served by our school district has a population of just under 40000 residents in the beautiful north central BC.

We serve 3000 students in our standard schools and approximately 900 FTE at EBUS Academy one of the largest online schools in British Columbia. Our region has affordable housing welcoming communities and a lower cost of living than many other regions. Come and enjoy over 200 lakes rivers and streams and an abundance of outdoor recreation at your doorstep.

At the Secondary level the ISS teacher delivers academic support to Indigenous students: liaising with school-based staff including teachers counsellors and administration; as well as collaborating with the Indigenous Education Department and other community supports. The ISS teacher will work with small groups as well as in full classrooms in a push-in model. The ISS teacher will also track data on engagements with Indigenous students using the AIMS system. The ISS teacher will provide grad coaching to all Indigenous students in grades 10-12.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education (Middle or Secondary).
  • A valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in The Ministry of Education and Childcare.
  • Specific training and experience teaching Dakelh Neduten or Wetsuweten Language and Culture is a necessity
  • Certified Indigenous Language Teacher fluent in Dakelh Neduten or Wetsuweten language and aware of the local differences in dialects
  • Demonstrates a detailed knowledge and understanding of Dakelh Neduten or Wetsuweten history culture traditions and communities
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a positive classroom learning environment that engages students in active learning experiences
  • Experience in differentiating instruction to create success in learning for each student
  • Experience in integrating appropriate technologies into instructional practices in order to improve learning outcomes for students
  • Ability to work as a member of a district team to create curricular competencies and content in Dakelh Neduten or Wetsuweten language.
  • ISS Teacher Experience in providing literacy and numeracy intervention support to students
  • ISS Teacher Strong understanding the BC Graduation Program and graduation options for students
